Hi!

I would like to make a youtube playlist widget for a website, where everyone could add a video to it and the videos would be played one after ther other at the same time for everyone.

For that, I know that I will need to maintain a connection between the clients and the server (so the server sends the instruction to everyone connected to play that video), so I suppose that I will need the language to support socket programming.

However, I would like NOT to use flash. I would then like to know which other programming language would allow me to do that, if there is one.

Well you know you could always do something like this in Javascript. Don't maintain a permanent connection but instead have Javascript check the playlist on a regular interval to see if new videos are to be played or not. You could also do something like a Java applet if you really want to have a connection open for everyone. It depends on your design but both of those languages will do what you ask and can be very collaborative.

Hm.... I would need people to have control on the playback so it really needs to be in real time.

Is it worth syncing each video to every user? Peoples connection speed will vary, especially if they use different quality settings.

You may be able to pick a quality setting to give to every one and wait to every one video loads to let them start playing. But what happens when some one lets say is on dial up? Might annoy the other people in the group.

Unless you want to group users by there connection speed, to keep things in sync.

I would like to do like www.tinychat.com does actually.

When a mod posts a vid, it comes of for everyone and the one who posted it can control the playback while other users can either mute or close the video locally.

I want to do that except that everyone would be able to post in the playlist.
