You would be extradited and go to jail.

Suppose I somehow(in disguise) tricked Alexander Ovechkin into downloading and running one of my programs.

I played a funny game with this name of a person I had no idea about. I wondered - what were the odds this name, mentioned by a Canadian, was a hockey player? Vegas put the odds high in the 70-80% range. Thanks for validating the stereotype!

Side note - if this Russian got his government to help snag you, I would be more concerned about them than say the FBI.

Why are you worried about the FBI? What - the Mounties up there not scary enough for you?

I don't think Mitnik should even get mentioned now except in discussions involving zfo...

you'd also come to the sad conclusion that 50% of your posts are in "count to X" threads.

What a misguided thing to say. What, because Mitnick's site was compromised by some group (folk I had to google to know who they were) means what Mitnick did in the past was irrelevant?

Sure.. while we are lumping things in from the past we can't discuss because technology has advanced let's not forget George Washington, FORTRAN, and all things older than 30 minutes prior to now.

Mitnick was just the first name to pop into my head since I was thinking about his business card being a lock pick set.

I used cracker to describe him as a lawbreaker or criminal or what have you.

Shoot I would rank Brad Fitzpatrick above Mitnick as far as hacking goes but as far as I know Fitzpatrick doesn't or didn't work in a destructive manner. Jacob Appelbaum would beat them both out for his work on cold boot attacks alone.

I was just saying that unless you are a deranged psycho-killer or in a high-speed chase then it won't take a bunch of cops to arrest you.

The real question is why spy on some hockey player? Why wouldn't you go for someone everyone knows...like skyhawk133?

The whole idea is messed up.

Oh and on the ISP logs I did a little searching and found: US ISPs are required by law to keep records for up to 90 days upon request. The time depends on the ISP however 5 years ago it would have been as soon as 24 hours when the records where deleted. I think according to UK law ISPs keep records for around 12 months.

What about that one hacker that had a book written about him by the other person that caught him? The book was "The Cuckoo's Egg" and all I remember clearly in that book was that he microwaved his shoes for some reason.

Wow, 12 months? How would they keep that data stored considering the UK doesn't have that small of a population?

It's predator and prey out there in cyberspace, that's why you need to learn how to defend yourself so you don't wind up as a Chinese zombie.
