how does this code work?!?

Posted 01 March 2010 - 01:31 PM

will someone please tell me how the below code can count the number of people who visited the site, keep track of it and "unlock" certain things such as pictures on the site. it only counts people with a different ip, i tried re-entering the site url it gave me and was still zero, then i used a proxy and it went up to 1, so that must mean it's copying your ip address and storing it and each time someone goes to the site it checks the ip against the ones that it already collected. when a certain number of different ip's visit sight, certain images are unlocked on site. HOW THE HECK IS THIS DONE!!?!? please tell me i'd like to know! dont worry, i'm not going to use it for the same purpose as that site. o btw i'm a noob and don't know that much about javascript, just the basics, and absolutely nothing about php so if you can explain in detail that would be great!!! i don't know how to thank you enough for helping me with this :)

This is done using a database and server side programming. The language of choice is probably php and the database is most likely MySQL. Inside of the database there is going to be a table that only has IP adresses. On the website they have code that Checks the database for the ip using a query. If the row exists then do nothing. Else increase the count by 1. The count is also going to be stored on this database.

You are not going to be able to see the code through your end because the server executes it and displays the page without it. There is no way to copy this code, you will have to find something across the net. Luckily for you there are tones of these scripts across the new, all you need to do is use google.

Then why post the source to a site that is obviously obscene and probably against forum rules? Wouldn't it be better instead to ask a relevant question?

Common sense should dictate that's not the brightest idea... It could very easily offend someone on here and said people would be rather reluctant to bother to "help"

Slightly off topic though, I go to certain security oriented sites that I don't mention here that this form of question is asked multiple times by newbies who think that asking that type of question is great cover and as such after well over 100 such topics I've closed on those sites, I'm a tad skeptic of ulterior motives...
