Thoughts on Cpus

Posted 02 March 2010 - 10:05 PM

Hey guys, I'm starting to research my options for a new CPU, motherboard, and ram. I'll get the latter two squared away once I figure out which CPU is right. Anyone have any thoughts on the matter? I'm a CS major and I do a lot of programming (mainly C++ and Java) and some Photoshop work. I'm mainly looking for something that will decrease compile times and the time it takes to calculate what my assignments require with a little leeway. I do game occasionally (mostly steam games). Is the i7 920 overkill? Sorry I've been out of the market for quite sometime and want to make sure this is an informed decision.

Thanks,
-Brett

The i7 will definitely decrease compile times, although they shouldn't be outrageously high anyway. You can't go wrong with an i7. :)

Matter of fact, if I was planning on building a new computer (for gaming, mostly), I'd totally go with an i7.

The i7 is the fastest processor out there. So...if it's speed you're looking for, then you can't do better.
