XNA Game Studio 4.0 - Coming Very Soon

Post icon  Posted 10 March 2010 - 07:58 AM

From what is available on blogs led by Microsoft developers, it is clear that XNA Game Studio 4.0 is coming out really soon. What is it about? It still supports development of Windows and Xbox 360 games, but it also introduces development capabilities for Windows Phone. Shawn Hargreaves writes in his blog(short list of new features):

Quote

* New platform
- Windows Phone 7 Series

* New features
- Integrates with Visual Studio 2010
- Dynamic audio output
- Microphone input
- BasicEffect has four new siblings
- SkinnedEffect
- EnvironmentMapEffect
- DualTextureEffect
- AlphaTestEffect

* Improved portability and usability
- Collapsed graphics caps into just two profile levels: Reach and HiDef
- Many graphics API improvements
- This involves some breaking API changes
- Split Microsoft.Xna.Framework.dll into several assemblies, to make it more obvious which pieces are available on each platform

I was just wondering about this the other day. I can't wait to try it out and see the new features, particularly the support for Windows Phone 7.

Did I read that right, though? No more Zune support? :v:

It wasn't officially confirmed, but in Michael Klutcher's post it says that it is recommended to port Zune games to Windows Phone. So I would assume that soon Zune support will be dropped in XNA.

Was hoping with the release of VS 2010 and the .NET Framework 4.0 there would be a release of a new version of XNA. Can't wait to check it out.

Look for my blog post about some of this I've heard @ GDC. XNA 4.0 will be integrated in VS2010 (which is already in RC, so release should be soon too (hopefully not long)). XNA 4.0 will support Windows, XBLA, and Win7 Phone. However all of the stuff about win7 phone is really going to come out @ MIX.

Just pointing this one out - there is no C# 2010. There is Visual Studio 2010, which includes C# 4.0 as a component language.
