When you hear South-Africa what do you think?

Posted 11 March 2010 - 08:09 AM

Please tell me when someone tells you South-Africa what do you think and what is the first thing that comes to mind?
What do you know of the history and of whats going on here?
Who of you have been here? and Who of you would want to come here?

i have been thinking of this alot since we are hosting the FIFA 2010 and Everyone says we are prepared ( where as I really dont think we are)!

First word that comes to mind is "diamonds". Other than that I don't know too much about South Africa. I'm not sure if I would want to come there though.

I was waiting for that. please elaborate on that.. and give your thoughts.

Apartheid is MAIN cause for everything over here the main reason for all the crime happening.

I want outsiders perspectives of you you think is wrong and who is right in the country? who do you think is the bad guys and do you think south-Africa is on the same course as Zimbabwe?

Such a question means that you have different "standards" for defining "good" and "bad"??
Good is good, bad is bad everywhere.
I know that some aspects considered OK in some places, but in other places they are not. But these are minor aspects and doesn't include all morals. I think this point is beyond your question anyway.

Nelson Mandella, place where a lot of white people in Africa are, probably one of the better vacation spots in Africa, good Scuba diving, some sort of ties to Britain, and... oddly enough, female castration/circumcision which after looking it up just now isn't even prevalent in South Africa, but I had a neighbor who was from South Africa and told horrible stories about the practice.

There ya go!

If I'm going to be perfectly honest, the first thing that comes to mind is that guy from lethal weapon 2 saying "plastic."

Krugerrand. Apartheid. Prawns. Ubuntu. Mark Shuttleworth. A leopard rug...

That last is one from a friend's house. When I was a kid, my little condo community in Florida had an influx of South African families; all white, all Jewish. One family had a den decorated in African artifacts, including a leopard hide with a head on it that made quite an impression on me.

For me, when I hear South Africa, I think of my mom who is African American, hailing from SA (she moved here when she was 2), and how much I miss my grandmom, who was Afrikans. I also think of Nelson Mandella, and the injustice done to him, as well as the Zulu tribe (my gmom traces ancestry to them), how delicious the food is there, Table Mountain, and how I broke my leg the last time my mom went (I was 2 at the time, 1984).

I have never been there, and until all the civil unrest there, actually had family that was there for over 100 years (they all moved to Australia). I would love to go there, specially since my adopted family history is from there.

ok interesting , You see. Like P4L said the injustice done to Nelson Mandela... see thats the whole thing. I am not sure whether the world see's or hears about the injust done to other people. Its always just us doing the bad things and that is not true. Dont get me wrong. Nelson Mandela is a great leader. Better then Pres, Mbeki or Zuma will ever be. But the HATE in our country is just pissing me of so much! There is not a day that goes by that I dont think of leaving the country over the simple reason of a future and safety. Its not that I am making things up but there is so much corruption its not true.. Our roads are in a bad state. Potholes as big as friggin man holes, (no money to fix that) but certain government employees gets R14000 car allowance.. that is insane! and then there is for example Malema ( Leader of the ANC youth league ) who publicly said kill all the white farmers.. I mean c'mon when will this end? Why must we suffer for what our great grandparents did back in them days. A select number of people hold on to the history, I have black/ coloured friends and work with some whom I get along with great and they feel the same! But its just absurd what's going on... Really and I dont think the world is aware of half it! The world only see's what the media shows them and only hears what the media broadcasts to them... and that I think is a global issue in all countries!

nice to get that off my chest!
