Capacitor on Motherboard Complication

Post icon  Posted 15 May 2006 - 12:56 AM

I can't use my PC anymore.
I realised that the capacitor next to my RAM Slot is extremely loose.
Sometimes it changes its position and hence loses its contact with the terminals and my PC refuses to start.

But when I keep fiddling with it and if by chance it comes in contact with the terminals, the PC starts.

I can't keep doing this as everytime it keeps getting more loose and one day it's gonna come off.

Is there any way I can solder the Capacitor back to the motherboard? Will my Hardware Technician do it or do I need to buy a new one?

This is really pissing me off...Sometimes ON sometimes NOT.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

sure, if moving it to make contact with the mobo makes it work, you could try sodering it...

Motherboards are cheap these days, maybe look into getting a new one if sodering doesnt work.

I guess I'll do that.
But if I buy a capacitor of the same capacity and solder that in...it should do the trick right?

I don't want to use the original capacitor cause it's really badly screwd.

In theory it would work just as good if you get the same one.

I dont now how easy to find something like that would be. I know we have places around here like Ax-Man. I'm guessing there may be surplus stores like that around you somewhere.

Talk to a college or university phyisics department, they can get any type of capacitor you need, i'm sure they would sell you one or tell you where they get them.
I currently have a few from a piece of hardware i scrapped, you never know when they will come in handy... plus having to bend a couple to put my heatsink on... i came close to being in your shoes.

if you have a low temp soldering pencil and solder and you are confortable soldering on multi layer printed circut boards by all means feel free. It is not like you can break it any more right you just need to be extremely careful. as to not touch anything that isnt that capacitor when you do it and you dont want to short the capacitor either as they hold a charge for a looooooong time. ( one guy i knew got blown across the room by a 1/2 farad capacitor that was out of a OLD TV that probally hadent been plugged in since the 1950's one as small as what you are working with will only shock the hell out of you like getting hit with a stun gun)

Damn! thats insane.

I knew they held a charge like that but I didn't know they could pack that much of a punch... Crazy..

actually they can and a 1/2 farad capacitance is quite high.i mean with a small potential of 2V it can be charged to 1Coulumb. and 1C is quite a huge charge.it would be equivalent to 9x10^8 kg weight.

yup the power passing through is not the deadly part, but it's the amperage or rather the milli-amps that can kill.

Yup...0.5F is a lot.

I have two stores in my place...awesome stores...they seem to have everything. I had visited them to buy resistors and IC's for my Binary Adders Project.

It's just that it takes 1.5 hrs to get there :(

Thanks Guys.

I had the same damn problem today. And I tried something really wacky.

I applied some saliva under the capacitor, hoping that the liquid would join the terminal of the capacitor with the mobo and conduct the charge.
AND IT DID!!!!!!!

The only problem is that it's not a permanent solution as the saliva gets evaporated soon.

It sucks when I can't access DIC just cause of a damn 100 microF Cap.

It's like I have to spit on my mobo everytime to visit DIC...Sheesh...
