Intel's six-core processor

Post icon  Posted 21 March 2010 - 09:49 AM

Intel's six-core processor made its debut at the GDC in San Francisco on Wednesday. This new six-core processor offers a lot, not only to gamers. Here's a brief overview of the processor for Intel's website.

Quote

The Intel® Xeon® processor 7400 series is best-in-class for demanding enterprise workloads, with almost 50 percent better performance‡ in some cases and up to 10 percent reduction in platform power compared to previous generation expandable servers.◊

Designed and optimized for IT, these 6-core processors provide industry-leading multi-core processing and greater computing performance without increasing footprint and powerΔ demands. In addition, these processors are designed with Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT), enabling an ecosystem of software-based virtualization from industry leading software providers.

Check out Intel for more information.

Sure have come a long way from the 8 and 16 bit processors I used when I started out.

We [programmers] already waste cores as it is. :)

Still stoked though, WANT.

I have to agree with KYA, programmers really do waste the power of multiple cores as it is. Due to this fact I think going from quad to 6 cores really is not as much of a leap as most people would think.

I think the industry should stop wasting their time with the more cores equals more excitement concept and pour their resources into building new processors with new compounds to get past their silicon chip limitations.

:)

Not so much, Your right, we need to spend more time on new compounds and stuff, but Multi-Core processing is just a all-around great idea, MULTI-TASKING for the win!

I'm still waiting for the 30 core CPU :)

I have to agree with KYA, there are to many Bloated programs out there that require "God's" computer just to run...

Sweet even more cores to run are already poorly optimized software. I suppose if the software isn't going to catch up we can just compensate with hardware, not the ideal solution but a quick fix just the same. AMD can't be far behind, although none of their processors seem to be making headlines (same old, same old I guess).

Put this on a dual socket and use this for number crunching or gaming, this would be great. Or a virtual server setup.
