Why would an employer ask this question?

Posted 25 March 2010 - 09:03 AM

So, I'm a little concerned.. I was filling out an on-line job application and during the "Federal tax" portion of the application I get this question:

Quote

Was your home address in the state of Louisiana, Alabama or Mississippi on August 28, 2005 (the date of Hurricane Katrina)?

It seemed "out of the blue" it was asked right along with other questions about food stamps, and other government support stuff.

I guess it makes sense, but its the first time I've ever seen a question like that. Why haven't I've seen questions like that for all the other disasters that have happened?

What kind of job is this for? I've never been asked such questions when filling out any tax document (other than my TurboTax questionnaire). An "employer" shouldn't be asking you for those sorts of things I don't think. Maybe after you're hired and you have to fill out your tax paperwork, but it shouldn't be something used by the employer, it'd be for the IRS?!

I think it has to do with companies getting a tax break for hiring people that were affected. No it is none of their business in my opinion.

It was for a job at Homedepot, That part with the Hurricane question was optional.

I filled it out with the hopes that it might get me a job faster :)
Although, when you do a search about how much Homedepot employees make, you find a lot posts of people complaining about Homedepot.

There were certain tax breaks and allowances for Katrina victims. Human Resources was being proactive for Fed tax reporting requirements.
