Right sided navigations

Posted 31 March 2010 - 03:47 PM

Hey, I have been away for awhile and the last time I was on the site was when the new layout was in beta. I have to say i like it!

I have noticed a lot of websites picking up on using there navigations on the right hand-side of the page. I would just like to know what peoples views are on this? Is the 'Nav', for you personally easier to use on the right side? Have any other Web developers adapted to designing sights with 'Nav' on that side?

EDIT:
I would like to point out your opinion does not reflect your view of D.I.C. Just a general question for web developers.

Thanks,
Tom

It's preference but honestly primary navigation should never be on the right side, you need primary at either the top or the left because a majority of the users of an english page or other left-right reading system will look there first.

its not a navigation. its more of an index or reference.

a true navigation needs to be on the left / top nav imo.

I think right side navigation is awesome on a site like this where the content is left justified. I tend to keep my mouse more on the right side anyways so a shorter move to get to where I need to go.

If designed correctly, any navigation can work.

Depends on your audience. Top and left nav positions are common and are kind of the informal web standard. English speakers read from top to bottom, left to right (as was mentioned earlier) and so the natural brain progression is top & left.

Right side nav works fine though if it's implemented properly. Biggest issue with that is the varying widths of people's browsers. Navigation is normally the one thing you don't want to get cut off, overlapped, truncated, etc. Left side or top with set sizing eliminates that for the most part since the nav elements tend to be static and not vary much in size from session to session whereas the site content itself can vary widely.

That and all browsers start the display of a page defaulted to top and left positions.

Right side navigation/links are good for a site like this because of the the information that is most important is on the left. In this case the forum, but for most sites I would use left navigation or top navigation or a combination of both. IMO.
