10Half?

Posted 11 June 2006 - 01:34 PM

I was browsing throught my DI-524 router's firmware last day for the sheer fun of it and I found something that I was unsure about in the cable test util. The wan cable that connects the router to the modem is evaluate 10half, while all the lan cables that communicate between the computers and router are all 100Full. At first I thought that this 10half thing was about the cable itself, since it was quite old and probably cat3 instead of cat5. I replaced the wan cable with a brand-spanking new cat5, and still the same diagnostic.

In my head the 10half message was telling me that I was loosing some serious speed from my cable internet connection, so I thought about it some more. It sprang to my mind that maybe my cable modem, who is at least five years old, might be locked to 10half and not capable of going 100full. My modem is an Ericsson PipeRider model HM200C.

So here is my question: I am not completely harnessing the speed of my connection because of the 10half diagnostic and if so would changing the modem speed it up?

I have included a screenshot of the firm's cable check tool.

10half refers to 10 mbps, half duplex.

Think of it like a telegraph over the ocean, really slow and only 1 person can talk at a time.

Routers operate at 10/100, that is the current speed of todays routers. WAN operates at 10mbps and LAN operates at 100mbps.

So to answer your question, no you cannot get more speed out of a different router.

Get a crossed-over Cat5. That will more than likely fix your problem.

Ummm No it means that your cable modem was designed for 10mbps maximum. Honestly unless you have the best ISP of all time that is giving you T-3 speeds for 49.99 a month 10 1/2duplex is more then plenty I bet you are only getting 1.5mbps through your cable 3mbps max so dont worry unless they start giving you 11 or 12 mpbs. Keep your money

7 mbps that is crazy fast

I would honestly say that there is no bottleneck on your end though be happy with the insane speeds you get and lament for those like me that only connect at a 33.2Kbps modem
