I would like to know what programs you all are using to design sites with.  Please omit dreamweaver because I'll never use it. Many people say they design their layouts in Photoshop, but I find the mess of code it makes such a waste of time--are there any other methods to avoid this lunacy?  Thanks for any suggestions or insight on this.

Unfortunatley madcat, your telling us to disclude the 2most popular programs for design. so, what are you expecting outta us?

I make my layouts in photoshop, cut it up, and put it all together MY way in dreamweaver. Then, i code all the php in notepad or a editor.

yep madcat. go use dreamweaver. what do u have against it?
ive used frontpage all my life cause its what i first had , but now i regret that decision. it limits you in ways you dont know about until you have actually used dreamweaver. i just started with dw and dotn understand very much of it because its a complete change from fpage, but im still trying 2 learn it cause i know it will help me in the long run.

photoshop- i do the same thing as quik, make it, cut it up, throw it in some tables and im done. haha. okay, its a lil more complicated than that but u get the picture.

No photoshop is cool, I didn't mean that.

--I just feel that dreamweaver offers less control, thats all.  I believe its more beneficial in the long run to hand code rather than use those tools.  I realize multitudes of people use dreamweaver and some gain rock star famous press--thats cool, nothing wrong with it--just the way I feel.

--Are there any good tutorials on cutting up your layouts and throwing them in tables using photoshop or fireworks.  haven't seen any that explains it in full detail.

i draw my sites on paper and then design em in Dreamweaver. If you know HTML well then i feel you can make sites in dreamweaver just as well as by completely handcoding.

Notepad owns!! :) I really like GoLive. I use notepad but I love GoLive.

Well, how much time do you spend cleaning up your code after using dreamweaver?

None. Dreamweaver works fine. If you want help, ask real questions, if you want to fight about how the industry standard sucks, I'll just close this. Sorry. This thread is just pointless if your not going to ask a real question.

Well I thought it was a real question neoracle.  I thought that is why forums were available to us. I'm not trying to put down dreamweaver at all.  Just trying to decide if I should hand code or use a wysiwyg.

THEY may not spend a lot of time cleaning up their code but they probably should. It's not that hard anyways, jump on over to http://www.alistapar...es/dreamweaver/ to learn a little about making dreamweaver behave. It's the same with GoLive though. Go with dreamweaver or golive or, notepad.

if you're going to hand code i suggest editplus

if you're going to use a program i'd use dreamweaver long before i would use frontpage

for graphics it's all about photoshop, and you don't have to use imageready to make your tables and slices if you don't want, you can cut them up yourself and then, like Quik said put them together in dreamweaver, or if you're really good you can hand code it in something like editplus

i feel as if we've all said the same thing, now it's up to you to do as you wish...

I'm with sloth but skip the DW step, so:
paper->photoshop->editplus (for handcoding)

handcoding is definitely the way to go. i hate trying to fight with wysiwyg editors, and you know your code so much better when you write it yourself (and especially if you decide later to do any server-side scripting).

i don't chop up layouts in photoshop; i just use it to design and then recreate it by hand.
