Best C# book?

Posted 08 April 2010 - 07:41 PM

Right now I have a Wrox 'Beginning C# 2005' book but it sometimes is hard tof ollow. I started to look at OReilly's 'Programming C# 3.0 5th Edition' and it seems a bit nicer and more up to date (using a newer version of .NET). What book would you guys recommend? I want one that might go from beginner to starting intermediate for right now. Would buying the OReilly book be good or is another recommended?

I make several book recommendations on my blog including 4 books in C#. So you might want to check it out. I provide links to the books so you can see what they look like. The best way to pick a book I find is to simply look through them at the bookstore and read a chapter or two. You can get a good feel for them that way. But it will always depend on how you learn on what book would be the best.

I really like the illustrated 2008 book because it shows lots of diagrams. Not exactly for newbies, but does teach some useful tactics. Enjoy! :)

Hey there Blank Program,

I've not read too many C# guides, Well, one to be precise, but You should try 'For Dummies' Author, I'm not sure who he is, but he Shows you how to code, and Different things in a fun way. I can't provide any link sorry. Hope I helped :smile2:

I've found Microsoft Visual C# 2008 step by step very good. Been using it for a while and I've learned quite a bit from it

In my experience, Professional C# 2008 by Wrox is really good, covers most areas at a nice pace so you don't get bored with pages and pages of explanation.

Then again you did specify a beginners book, my first programming book was the same as yours, except in VB.NET, found there was way too much theory for my liking, so maybe that's why you're finding it hard to follow.

Stuart444 I'm reading the same book. It seems pretty good though I'm only one page 50 yet.

I wholeheartedly agree.

That was my first C# book...

I'm now reading Deitel's "How to Program Visual C# 2008", which also seems like a good book and very thorough.

I would have to agree. I used step by step, and it is a very good beginner's book. I still use it occasionally as a reference, but am looking for my next book now. :)

I think I'm going to move this to C# Programmers since it's not a programming help question :)

Finished Chapter one of: Microsoft Visual C# 2008 step by step. Wow this book is totally awesome! It makes me hungry to learn more and more. I want to learn programming! To everyone who's finished it. If you know how to use what that book teach you, are you an intermediate programmer when finished?

It's good that you're enjoying the book, I haven't read it, however IMO I don't think you'd be classed as an intermediate programmer until you've completed a range of projects.

Just my definition ofc, if you keep trying, you can only get better.

No no no, in order to learn from a book it has to teach you.

Sams teach your self C#

This is fast accurate and teaches very well.

Get the ebook of torrents!

Ive tryed many books and im currently trying to learn C++ but it has a "textbook" oriented feel to it and im struggling!

If there is ever a book for C# its sams teach your self. Stay away from C# for dummies "useless".

The quickest way to learn is reverse engineering find code use it manipulate it for your own ends ask questions about how it works.

Then after a few months you will understand basic principles.

Its better than the alternative which is dry reading and dry learning a boring code. Reverse engineering has to be the most exciting fastest learning method.

I picked up a C++ book last week and within 8 weeks I will have learnt the basics and will move onto the intermediate stuff polymorphism, inheritence etc etc

Books that are exciting keep you in the loop simple to explain and understand. Unless you have a high degree of english literacy and are a book smart type of person who can consume information and regurgitate it then stick with Sams teach your self.

I ended up getting this book:
http://www.amazon.co...ref=oss_product

for right now. It has a newer publish date then this: http://www.amazon.co...70998834&sr=1-1 which is what I have as an ebook currently. I looked at HeadFirst but it was way too messy for me so I stuck with this.

Was it a good choice, at least to get me going for now?
