PHP runs on all platforms. ASP is Microsoft specific. That makes PHP many orders of magnitude better in my opinion.

There is no better language or technology, All languages and platforms have their pros & cons. ASP.NET usage is growing by leaps and bounds, and a lot of major companies are starting to adopt it (Such as NewEgg.Com, DotNetNuke.Com (well they've been .Net based from the beginning) and others). ASP.NET is an excellent platform to develop on, and I know some will consider that a biased statement from me given my take on Microsoft and .Net as a whole.

There are a lot of tasks that I find much easier with ASP.NET, and a lot of times PHP can become convoluted when developing on a large scale (once again just my opinion since I can develop in both)

I agree with PsychoCoder that each technology has its stengths and weaknesses... and also that PHP becomes convoluted at times.

I will say that based on the research that we've done with our Students 2 Business program, there are about 10 job openings for every student that graduates with .NET skills.

Also, if you're just getting started - I recommend that you put your hands on as many technologies as possible. Having exposure to a diversity of skills is really valuable.
