Posted 13 April 2010 - 01:02 AM

Hello,

I would like to ask if some specialist can critique my website and my website logo.
www.logolion.net

And also I would like to ask how someone can choose which colors to use in his website
and most IMPORTANTLY how to use them???

Thanks!

This sounds like something that should be posted in Site Check.

First off - the straight humor of a design site asking about colors and how to use them is not wasted on me.

About Us
LogoLion is a design agency that provides high quality and affordable designs of brands and logos.

Our goal is to provide the best image for our customers in order to help them create a reliable, strong, pleasant and memorable image of their company, knowing that this image will accompany them in all their promotion actions for a long time.

Second.. well the site's pretty bland and lacks direction. The wood panel background is okay but why?

The giant red gradient banner logo is.. well okay I guess, but doesn't fit the background.

The blue buttons should have their own grouping some how.

Then the pages that come up are black text on white background? Ah.. what about that wood panel thing?

There is no theme... there is no cohesive message.. The writing is off and confusing.

which colors to use in his website

The colors should be based on the company's logo and *their* colors... probably not by internet forum vote.

If you want my honest opinion here you shouldn't even think about logo or graphical design at a professional standard yet, and not for a good 2-3 years more worth of practice.

http://www.w3schools.com

LEARN html and css, and I mean everything. Table based design is not acceptable for any designer worth mention and never will be in this day and age. You need to know how to make a flexible css layout from scratch.

As far as your graphics you're, as said above, far far too early in to even think about offering services.

Let's start with the logo. It's simple with a radial pattern and a lions face, anyone with illustrator can do something to that level in even an hour. Take some pride in your design work, most professionals take weeks and even months to get a quality logo done, and for good reason too.

The banner needs help. Drop shadow that is commonly visible is a sin against design standards, gradients are as well unless used properly (which in this case they're not.) Faux italics are a bad idea, and the font looks to be rather cheap as it's not smooth at even a basic size meaning it's either free or the banner is getting resized. This is ignoring how out of place the banner is with the rest of the site.

The background is completely unnecessary and just serves to lag the load time down substantially.

The menu needs help as well. The text is blurry and hard to see, the stroke doesn't help at all, in fact it makes matters worse. No where else on the site is blue used and why you'd pull out orange is also a bad idea. Pick a consistent color theme.

As for the typography of the site you have no line-height adjustment whatsoever which is a basic principle of design. Line-height should be at least 2x the size of the text used. You also need to use larger margins and more white space to separate the content from the edges of the page otherwise the site begins to look cramped.

I'm not sure what you're using to design any of this but you need to learn code the right way and use notepad to code for at least 2 months to get a solid understanding of what html and css are. I assume MSO stands for microsoft office, in which case you've committed one of the worst atrocities in web design by using any microsoft product to design a page (save expression)

Overall you're far far too early to start in design, keep reading and keep practicing. We all have to start somewhere.

What Lemur said ^^

It is unbelievable how many people start website design and think within weeks they are good enough to make some money. VERY VERY VERY unlikely that will happen! Unless of course you are a very experienced designer before hand, then you might have a chance.

I went freelance 3 years after I started learning. It lasted 1 week, until I decided that there is no chance in hell I would be able to make anything nice and I would feel terrible if I sold my designs to everyone.

Even now (although I do design work sometimes) I am mostly a developer, I have been practising for years and years but I still do not impress myself. So, really, PLEASE just work on your own sites and make mocks all the time.

I have found it useful to make a mock brief and to go through the stages that you would if it were a real client.

You have a HOME link on your home page, that leads to your HOME page.
Its like a Paradox :)

I have been making websites for almost eight years now and a lot of the work I come up with is still crap. Lemur ripped apart one of my most recent designs too. Web Design in my mind falls no shorter than the title Graphic Designer. Now on the other hand, Web Developer is a different idea. Anyone can be a web developer but only that of an artsy mind can do web design. I see where your trying to go with the lion site, but keep practicing - maybe it will look better the second time around.

The very first result on google for 'web design' is this:
http://www.heritagew...CFUnW5wodxybrNA

Very simple design, no background images - professional and plain.

Next is this:

Same idea

See my point? (and everyone else's) :)

Well at least it has the wood table. Websites should generally be in the color(s) of their logo as stated. Websites should not use images for navigation, nor should they use images without alt tags. Your site is not accessible to people with disabilities, such as those with a screen reader, and it's not accessible to search engines.

I'll give you the alt tags but images are fine to use, just use negative text-indent or substitution methods (which again, granted, he didn't use.)
