Study computer hardware, networks, security, and operating systems for about 10-15 years. That should get you started.

And then perhaps you'd like some one to show you how to design computer chips? That's a big task and no one is going to do it for you unless you're willing to pay large sums of money. Probably somewhere close to what AV companies pay entire teams of programmers! Now, if you want to break it down into small pieces and show some effort (your own code) on your part, you can expect help.

Merged similar subjects into a single topic.

Apparently the Indians have moved on from antivirus in VB.NET to antivirus in C/C++. Is antivirus creation something in the National Curriculum of India now, or is it just at one particular school? This is just so bizarre. I'm sure the requirement is probably to use Turbo C/Turbo C++ also, right?

This is why all first time posters should have to wait for moderation to see their posts, and they should be required to agree to the rules before submitting. That way these things could be removed without bothering everyone, and even the dimmest bulb would know that they weren't going to get anywhere so there would be far fewer of them.

We get this question a good deal. Lots of people want to write anti-virus programs and most of the people asking the question don't have the background required -- which makes sense since if they did they would not ask the question.

There are a number of different approaches that have been taken over the years with regard to anti-virus programming. The most common (as far as I know, I am not a security professional) is to find some "signature" of the virus. That is, find some bytes that are unique to that particular code and search files as they are being opened for the "signature".

Anti-virus programming is VERY HARD -- not because the techniques/algorithms are really advanced (they really are not) but because you need to know SO MUCH about the computer industry. You need to know about ALL KINDS of different file formats and different technologies. The most harmful viruses in the last couple of decades have been macro viruses that exploit some vulnerability in a program or protocol. While a virus author only really needs to learn about 1 vulnerability to write a virus, an anti-virus programmer must know about ALL of them.

Anti-virus programs also need to stay current -- this means they are in continual development and always on the lookout for new information on what trends there are in viruses and what vulnerabilities have been discovered.

As you might imagine it is very hard for an individual to be terribly successful at programming anti-virus software. Its really too much for 1 person to handle. It takes a team, it takes money, it takes time.

If you are truly interested in developing anti-virus software then you will need to dedicate yourself to the forums/blogs/newsgroups/mailing lists etc of the security professionals who are already in the business.
