Developer Blogs (Members Blogs)

Posted 22 June 2006 - 07:28 PM

Continued From: http://forums.dreami...wtopic16662.htm

Alrighty boys and girls, the dream.in.code team is currently beta testing the new Developer Blogs. I've got a few more minor changes I need to make so everything looks good, but so far everything is going as planned.

We will be pre-releasing the ability to create blogs to DIC++ members in the next week. Once the DIC++ members have provided their feedback and had their chance to play, we will roll out blogs to Non-DIC++ Contributors, Authors, and Experts.

A few days later we will give all members access to create or link their blogs. Only full members (10+ posts) will be able to host their own blogs.

I'm really looking forward to this, all of the DIC++ members should definately take advantage and help Chris perfect the new DIC Developer Blogs by finding bugs and giving suggestions and feedback.

Well that's great news, but I do think that the 10-post limit is quite slack. To my opinion lots of random posters who don't deserve a blog will get one. Will moderators have some power over member blogs?

My goal with the blogs is to offer users who may not be interested in forum discussion an avenue to share and participate in the community, so letting anyone with at least 10 posts have a blog means they can contribute in their own way. Out of 10,500 members, we only have maybe 50-100 that are listed as contributors, authors, or experts. But we have a lot of users who are very knowledgeable and enjoy blogging who may not have a tutorial, or snippet, or even a new resource to contribute.

Members will have to actually create and setup their blogs through their member panel, it's not something that will be created automatically. So if they are interested in blogging, they will have the opportunity to do so.

Blogs will be moderated in the same way the forums are.

You know, I usually don't blog (usually is a very strong word in this sentence). I'll see if a blog can be useful...

Let's see if any of those bugs pop up on my screen.

I'll give it a shot next week when it's out...

DIC++ members should now be able to create their own blogs using the "Edit My Blog" link in their member panel.

It's a pretty easy process. Once your blog is created, go to it using the "Your Blog" link in your control panel, or by visiting the "Blogs" link in the navigation. You'll see a link under "Entries" in the blue menu to "Add Entry". This is how you add new entries to your blog.

I'll work on the link in the member panel so once you've setup your blog it takes you directly to it instead of the control panel every time.

Non-DIC++ members, you'll be able to see and comment on any of the blogs. In a week or 2 I'll let all the Non-DIC++ members create their own blogs. There are a few other little settings and tweaks we'll be making, but for right now, let's call this a beta :)

Unfortunately, I'm unable to apply the same skin to blogs as I use on dream.in.code, so you're welcome to add your own boxes, and drag them around the screen in your blog. You can move any of your content boxes to the left/right column and drag them up and down.

I think having a slightly altered look to the blogs is a good thing, it makes them seem more seprate from the main-site but yet a part of it... I would like to see something that links the blogs together a little better and more easy access to the blogs once they go live for the public

I agree,

I plan on adding links under the "My Contributions" link in each post or a new button so users with blogs can show it off a little easier.
