My First Internship

Posted 19 April 2010 - 04:58 PM

Today, I got hired on the spot for an IT internship at a local IT firm G3 Systems. I interviewed with the CEO this afternoon after school, and 30 minutes later he offered me a (paid) job working on whatever projects I wanted to, ranging from Steganography research to UIML (User Interface Markup Language, an extension of XML), to exploring mobile technologies like Android or iPhone development, or working on a team doing Java for large contracts!

Unfortunately, this will mean that I'll be on DIC less during regular business hours 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM EST. However, that's why we have nights and weekends- for hanging out on DIC. :D

I also want to mention that my work on DIC looked really good in the interview, and that I've really learned a lot from everyone on here. So thank you all for your help!

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Looking at that site, I would say you may have a very interesting job.

Now that you mention it, the Cube might be a better location if you don't mind moving it. :)

Oh...Wow! Fantastic Mac! Glad to hear you have a great job doing what you love! I have a few questions though... :P

1. Are you working strictly with Java or other languages as well?
2. What project interests YOU the most (pay aside)?
3. He obviously thought you were the best at what you do, will this give you an automatic place when you graduate?
4. With our main question answerer absent frequently, does that mean I actually have to work on the forums? :P

Anyway, congratulations fellow Java Geek!

@Dogstopper: Thanks! I'm really excited about it. To answer your questions:
1) In addition to Java SE, I hope to work some with the iPhone SDK, Android, Java ME, and UIML.

2) Stegenography & UIML; however, I'd love the experience working in a team setting on larger Java projects.

3) He told me that I set the bar for the others from CIT that he is interviewing later this week, and that he doesn't think anyone else from CIT will come in as qualified as me. :D Actually, he's looking to start a relationship with interns from CIT as juniors, and continue it throughout college, hoping to hire us right out of college. By then, if I continued with G3, I'd have 6+ years of real-world experience, which will be increadibly valuable.

4) Think of it as an hours change for me. On weekends and nights, I'll still be on. Plus, if I can keep my school laptop for the summer school portion of my internship (I get an easy A honors credit for CIT, and I only have to go to school one day a week for 6 weeks from 9:30-1:15), then I'll be on more (during my lunch hour maybe). But yes- this means you, erik.price, japanir and everyone else who supports the Java forum will have to step up some! :P

Thanks!

Edit: In case I didn't mention this, I don't start until June, so you and everyone else in the Java forum can ease back into things. Don't want to work you too hard. ;)
