Technologies for development of mobile web and applications

So this is a research question i got.

I'm not asking for full answers here but i don't understand

what it mean by "5 most popular technologies availabe for development of either mobile web or mobile application"

What does it mean by technology?

Lets say for mobile web...the techologies is wcss and xhtml right?
For mobile applications...the technologies are the programming languages or is it the ide which lets me write the application?

I would assume it means something like: Java for Android, Objective-C for IPhone/IPad, Silverlight for Windows Phone 7, etc.
