Hello, all.

I was part of a once great forum of like-minded IT experts. However, administration of the forum proved... lacking. As such, I am seeking another community to be part of. A few friends have suggested this community... and here I am.

Pleased to meet you :)

No worries, mate. Not many of us use Klingon anymore. Well... Maybe Chuck and Bryce Larkin. (Chuck season 1 reference for those who didn't get it)

I'm out of practice. I used to run the Klingon Fan Club out of Las Vegas NV. At that time the club was ACTIVE! It helped that the Star Trek Experience opened at the Hilton Hotel and that the UPN network liked working with us. So there were about 40 core members that were all pretty fluent at that time. Most weekends you would see a few of us in full uniform at Quarks Bar (in the Star Trek Experience). Hey, if you're going drinking: do it in style. Plus blood drives, charity events, hired events, movie openings where the theaters would have us set up for month in the lobby... etc.

We hosted the annual Klingon Feast which was a 3 day event for Klingons (and other species brave enough). Think of a Renaissance Fair for Klingons. Affiliate club members from as far as Germany would attend. It was kinda funny to have 200-300 people there whose native languages all varied, but Klingon remained the same in all countries. So Klingon was heavily used for conversational purposes, not just the events, story tellings and so on.

Sadly, as the Star Trek franchise died out so did the fan clubs. Then I left Las Vegas, so that further ended my regular use of it. Though the Klingon Language Institute still does its best to promote use of the language.

Wow. That's pretty cool.

How did you go about learning it? I never got into the whole Star Trek thing. I guess I was too young (or possibly not in existence) at the time. However, my interest in sci-fi has piqued somewhat recently. I've been reading books on astronomy which get me really excited, so I imagine I could get into Star Trek if I watched it. I've started reading Stephen King's The Dark Tower series (although I've started part-way into it), and that really gets me wanting to explore more sci-fi stuff.

I bet you got some funny looks in bars in full costume.

Like most languages: Practice. The KLI did mail order lessons. There are audio books by Simon & Schuster for 'Conversational Klingon'. There is a Klingon<->English translation dictionary. There is a more advanced book of Klingon for the Galactic Traveler. I even have a rare hardcover of Hamlet in the restored original Klingon, though the softcover is still available. or Much ado about nothing in the restored Klingon.

Then of course the club would do various functions where we needed to make presentations in Klingon, so that meant a lot of looking up and translating... closed captioning and subtitles on the shows when Klingons would be speaking. Etc.
