Hello, {s/World/Numberwhun/g}!

Posted 07 June 2010 - 04:37 PM

Hello everyone! Its good to meet all of you. While I have had my account for a little while, I still consider myself a relative newbie over here at DIC. I, like a bunch of others that have recently joined, am a refugee from another popular developer forum that has gone awry in ways that none of us were happy with.

Hopefully we all of us that come to DIC from that site will find a warm, fun community that will welcome us with open arms. Without further ado, the "Introduce Yourself" template:

Name: Jeff Kirkland
Location: New Hampshire, USA
Age: 38
Birthdate: 8/31
Sex: Male
Height: Tall
Weight: Happily Married
Hair: Brown
Eyes: Brown
Education: Some College. All my coding and computer are pretty much self taught.
Programming Languages: Perl, PHP, Shell Script(Bash, Ksh), {X}HTML/CSS, Python(beginning), some c/c++
Years Programming/Designing: 12
Employer: A very large Bank by day.
Hobbies/Interests: To begin with, my computers. I am also a Philatelist.
Favorite Bands: I find it easier to say that I don't like Polka, Christian music, or REALLY hard, acidic type rock. Everything else is game. I have favorites, but that is a long list as well.
Favorite Movie: Hackers / Antitrust / Matrix
Favorite Color: Black
Favorite Number: 5
Favorite Beverage: Diet Dew
Favorite Food: MMMMM...... FOOD! ('nuff said)
Favorite Sport: Golf
Favorite Phrase: PFM (Pure F***** Magic)
Favorite Animal: Black Panther
Favorite Video Game: Tiger Woods Golf
Favorite Quote: "Lack of planning on your part, does not constitute an emergency for me!"
Likes: Making friends, but especially friends who I can talk geek with.
Dislikes: People who lie to you!
Last Good Book I Read: Cryptonomicon (Neal Stephenson)
If I Could Have One Superhuman Ability, It Would Be: Immortality

Regards,

Jeff

Welcome to Dream.In.Code

Thanks for joining Dream.In.Code, hope to see you around the forums someday :)

You have just stepped into the greatest programming community on the Internet, we have experts for just about every mainstream language, and even some languages that aren't so mainstream, so the level of expertise is second to none. All will be more than willing to help, as long as you too are willing to put forth the effort to solve your problem, and to go along the road to becoming a better programmer smile.gif

I would like to ask that when making a programming question that you first place your code inside code tags like this :code: . This makes it much easier to read through large pieces of code, and keeps your post a little more organized.

When posting a programming question first make sure you're in the first forum, then make sure you provide as much information as you can think of that would make it easier for a 2nd pair of eyes to help you debug your issue.

If you happen to get bored (I know, it's real hard to do here) you can check out our Off Topic Caafeine Lounge, the Corner Cubical, dedicated to industry talk, or the Student Campus, dedicated to all things for students.

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact myself or another staff member, and we will be more then happy to answer any questions you might have.

Thanks for the welcome, guys!

@Motoma My re-reading of Cryptonomicon has led me to an interest in Data Mining. Sure, they were setting up a data warehouse, but still, it was my catalyst.

@mahcuz & @skyhawk133 What makes that even funnier is that I am the cook in the family. My wife bakes though, so she is also partly to blame. :)

If you are interested in data mining, you should take a look at Paterva's Maltego. Play around with it a little bit, and if you like it, download Backtrack4. BT4 has Maltego bundled with some devious NMap transform plugins that really put a edge on the program.

Cheers,
Motoma

Thanks man! I will have to read more into it. On initial look, the non-pay, free version is a bit limiting and at this point I am certainly in no shape to purchase a copy. But the free version is certainly a possibility for a little while. :)

I was with you all the way from the regex in the subject to just before you said the word "antitrust" in the context of favourite films. Then things became... difficult. I fear we may never be friends.

Oh, come on. My reason for liking Antitrust was its total and complete anti-Micro$oft nature. Now, if you are a M$ person, I will certainly not fault you for that as there are some people who have a need to run windows. Either way, there will be punches and jabs none the less, but still, all in good fun. :)
