AA in Business w/ BSCS or minor?

Posted 11 June 2010 - 10:29 AM

First - a bit of backstory:

I am currently in Texas, however I started my bachelor's degree in BA (business admin) in Ohio. Almost two years in is when I went south. After a hiatus and starting anew, I have run into an issue where a majority of my quarter classes in Ohio did not transfer or did not fulfill the full hour requirements of the Texas semester schools.

27 hours transferred, most of which are business. Great if I was still interested in getting a BA degree. I have changed my major to CS but am pondering if I should take advantage of the business classes I do have. Here are my choices:

Take 6 2000-level classes and get an Associate of Arts Degree in Business, then move on to complete my BSCS.

Or take 6 upper division classes (probably a few of the 2000-level, too, as prereqs) and get a minor in BA along with by BSCS.

Will one stand out more or be a greater benefit to me? Would either be so unimpressive that I might as well not take away time from CS studies and just forget about it?

Thanks in advance for the input!

On paper, a minor doesn't always mean anything to everybody, to be honest. The Associate's degree, while requiring fewer courses, is an actual degree. If you hate business, I wouldn't worry about it, but it can be nice to have some more experience.

I agree and disagree with xclite. Minor doesn't mean anything to anyone. But neither does an Associate's whether it's a degree or not. In the world of programming, if that's what you want to do, go strictly for CS. The business degree won't do much for you. Anything you've learned from lessons taken from those courses will be enough.

Thanks for the input!

I talked to a few friends who work in the industry and I heard exactly the same about the minor - nobody cares about it.

I'm doubtful any organizations will really look at my AA in business and think much of it, and honestly money locations (including my current job) don't even recognize associate's degrees.

I feel I am far better off spending the time working on 6 CS classes for my degree instead of on a business degree - I suppose I could always look into an MBA if I am ever inclined to pursue business.
