What programming experience do you have so far? By that, I mean, have you ever worked on team projects, where you programmed? What about your portfolio? What programs can you demonstrate?

Hence, the problem. You don't have enough experience.

Keep at it. Once you have a portfolio of games to show off, you can then consider applying for jobs in the industry. I assume you're talking about a career path in your question.

If you meant something else, or have certain doubts or troubles, you should mention them.

Back end? Front end? Are you referring to browser based games?

For desktop games, you want languages with at least GUI toolkits, and ideally, with some bindings to OpenGL or Direct3D or both. A number of languages have this, although the big names are C++, Java, C#,and Python. Any .NEt language and JVM language will do, and others are workable as well, but for learning purposes, these 4 standout. In particular, it's easiest to learn with Python and C#.

I don't understand your use of the word "backend". It makes sense in a client-server context, like browser based games, where there's a server serving up data. Everything on the server side would be considered the backend.

But what backend are you talking about in a non-browser based game?

I'd suggest using C# with XNA to get some experience with game programming. Then once you get a grasp on that and have completed some projects, you could try C++ and OpenGL.

Good luck!

Hi DpinkyandDbrain,

When I was first interested in programming games, the hardest part for me was figuring out how the hell to get graphics onto the screen. I'm assuming you're in the same situation. In school (I still am in school, junior in computer science program) they don't teach you that kind of thing, unless it's a game programming degree. After doing a lot of research, I found that SDL(Simple Direct Media Layer) was the easiest to learn for beginners.

Sooo... that is my suggestion to you. Learn C++ and SDL, then start making some simple games to build up your portfolio. The first game I ever made (and just finished it a month ago actually...) was a pong clone. I'm currently work a pacman clone.

It's all a progression. Start small, then work your way up to more complicated, and more difficult games.

Here's a list of great resources to help you start out in game programming.

SDL

Great tutorials for beginners
SDL Wiki
SDL API Documentation

Developer Communities

DreamInCode Game Development Tools/Resources
Game Developer Website

Once you get some experience with simple graphics programming, then maybe you can branch out and do whatever you want. I would not start with Direct3D though because IMO it's very complicated.

Just remember to learn, learn, learn.

I hope that helps!

If you are interested in Game Programming, this article here on DIC would be a good read. It has a lot of advice for getting started with Game Programming.

The language for starting out I don't think is as important as just learning AA language. SDL is a great thing to use to get started with. I am currently learning it now actually. It can be used with C# as well as C++ so you have some options. At this point don't worry so much about all the details, just start making games to build up a portfolio.
