I got a phone call yesterday form a student who is interested in job shadowing at my business. I'm always eager to help out those seeking to further their own education & skill set, so I agreed to let him come in for this job shadowing opportunity.

My initial question is, am I expected to pay him or the school?

I asked the phone candidate this & he indicated that the school is paying him. My concern is I'll get a bill at the end of the week

My followup question would be, for those who have done this : How much training did you receive? Was it worth your time or more of a hassle?

I'm to meet with the young man & his mother, so I'm assuming that he is still in high-school. Is this type of opportunity aimed towards highschoolers or college level?

it can be aimed at both. If he indicated that his school is paying him it seems to me more of a college level, although since your meeting him and his mother that leans more toward high school. When i did my last job shadow i just followed a developer and watched him do his work. I never actually got to do any of the actual work.

I actually got an opportunity to job shadow one of our PS team that develops our remote applications. I just got to use one of the days I normally work to go out with them and see how they work and how they interact with our customer.

Your best bet would be to just contact the school and verify it with them to be sure. I've never heard of someone in High School job shadowing unless it's for some type of Vo-Tech slub or maybe FBLA or something.

But it's definitely something thats beneficial to everyone involved. The business person gets to train someone who may very well end up applying with you someday and you have a sense of what he is like and how he works. The student also gets to see how the day to day operations work and if you let him do some actual work he can get some real experience which looks good on a resume.

@no2pencil: You are doing an awesome thing by giving a high school student the opportunity to shadow. Be careful, however, about the issue of payment. I remember reading an article a couple months back about Unpaid Internships being illegal if the employer failed to meet certain conditions. So I did a little digging and found an article about it. I think most businesses decide that it is easier to just pay rather than worry about compliance.

As far as I understood job shadowing was basically an individual kicking it with your all day.. seeing what your daily routine is and asking questions. At best buying them lunch, but never paying a school or the individual since well.. they aren't doing work.

its a con. A way into the building to scope it out for whatever nefarious purposes this kids "school" has in mind. The only real "job shadowing" is the stupid, "bring your kids to work day" and that too is just a con only going the other way. You have been had.

Think about it... A cold call directly to you? mark.
