WEEK 23: IRC Chat

Week 23: IRC
Submitted By: Amrykid

Posted Image

CHALLENGE:
Try and make a IRC Client or IRC Bot.

INTRODUCTION:

Quote

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a form of real-time Internet text messaging (chat) or synchronous conferencing. It is mainly designed for group communication in discussion forums, called channels, but also allows one-to-one communication via private message as well as chat and data transfers via Direct Client-to-Client.

IRC is a very old technology (existing before I was born). Help bring it back to life and try making something. Best of all, any language that supports sockets can be used!
IDEAS:
  • A Bot that does Math.
  • A Simple IRC Client.
  • A bot-hosted game.

RESOURCES:
There are several resources that may help you.
IRC on Wikipedia
IRC.org
IRC/2 Numerics List
HOW TO GET STARTED:
Getting started is simple. Follow these steps to get you bot up and running (if your writing your own lib).
  • Connect to the server over TCP. Send the following commands:
  • USER Name Name ServerAddr :RealName
  • NICK BotNick

To make it join, send "JOIN #chan".
To make it leave, send "PART #chan".
If your not interested in creating a lib, you may use one that you find on the internet.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Since this challenge inspired my adventures into the IRC world, which led to a highly advanced and extensible IRC bot that turned out to be my biggest project, I'll go ahead and post those projects.

http://github.com/Raynes/irclj/ A work-in-progress IRC bot that was designed to replace Pircbot in the original sexpbot. It's long since succeeded in that goal, but still misses features that could help generalize it and make it useful for IRC clients and such as well.

http://github.com/Raynes/sexpbot/ One of my biggest and most successful projects, and I'm very proud of it. It's along the lines of some of the big IRC bots in terms of extensibility and usefulness.

Also, you screwed up the title, again. :P

Man, I made a crappy little IRC client a long time ago, using Pircbot's Java library. I have since gotten rid of the project...for some reason. Probably when I replaced my hard drive. Oh well.

Oh man... the IRC scripting memories :)

I once got kicked out of a room because I made a script that learned & answered the trivia bot. I'll see if I can dig up some of my old mirc scripts!

I think we just made a mistake by thinking that just because IRC development is fun to us, veteran IRC users/developers, it would be fun and interesting to the rest of the DiC community. Most of which do not use IRC.

The challenge was fine. The problem was that we directed it towards the wrong group of people.

@programble: If you don't like a challenge, then don't participate. However, please don't post that "this challenge is a fail." It isn't appropriate, and is rather rude, as the Team and other members spend a significant amount of time on coming up with and submitting challenges.

Better, but if you aren't here to participate in the challenge, positively comment on someone else's submission, or have anything positive to say about the challenge, then please refrain from posting about it. The recent trolling I've seen today, as well as habitually, is getting a little old.

Thank you for your cooperation. :)

I know this was a bit old, but I'm finally coming back around to this thread. I got the notification for the challenge way back when but was way too busy to participate. Now I have a little bit of free time so I thought I'd take it on ;)
I love IRC and first cut my internet teeth on it way back in the day. I appreciate you guys bringing it back to the spotlight on behalf of us old-timers ;)
