This sound like a great service?

Posted 22 June 2010 - 05:54 AM

So I was thinking, how cool would it be to rent a computer across the web for game rendering.

I know what you are thinking, lag lag lag, but there are possible ways to use a computer to render games for another pc, given you know what you are doing I think it could be possible.

Heres a great example "StreamMYGame" allows you to stream games from PC to PS3. Another would be remote play for psp, you can actually play some ps3 games using it(yes).

The service would be cheap at $4/hour?

People could buy credits and rent out a pc of their choice, look at the specs, the locations, ping time ms, and more.

If this idea is favored and i'm not hated for trying to be creative, I can program it.

Edit: I'm going to try and experiment on making a free alternative to streammygame, any help would be appreciated greatly.

Double Edit: Just made a remote desktop app by sending pics over tcp(was gonna do udp but was rushing). And it's way to laggy to be used for anything other than remote desktop help :/.

Interesting idea, thogh seems like it would be rather complicated (removing lag and all) but definitely doable.

Doesn't OnLive do something similar? I think if it works correctly and they manage to use the tachyons well, it'll be a wonderful day for gaming everywhere!

No more 500$ systems.

This kind of service is already there:

http://www.onlive.com/

It streams rendered game images to your PC so you don't need good graphic card. I haven't tested it and I doubt it is available to Finland but I'll have to use google a bit more to find out if anyone has experiences of it.

e: oh poo, so slow again.

Decent idea. However, some games that track user accounts, scores and such also log logins and passwords and I'd assume you'd be renting out the machine to more than one person. Also, I believe there are some games where your actions in the game can get you booted and/or banned by the product ID for the game as opposed to just the user account in use.

If you got both ends on a FIOS network you could probably work around screen refresh rates and such enough to make some games playable I'd guess. Just what I'd need though...yet another way to slay productivity...as if WC soccer and DIC weren't already bad enough. :D

If anyone is interested, here's an AMA from Reddit about an OnLive subscriber.

Paying for a game you don't own AND a subscription? They shot themselves in the foot.

Paying for a monthly subscription and playing whatever you want? I'd do that.

I used to do Gametap, which was sweet, but I couldn't afford it anymore.
