Google Bot

Hey. So I have finished my first website and I am doing all this stuff with google. I was just wondering, does it take a while for all pages to be indexed? Also, I submitted my sitemap to google. In total, there are 22 links in my sitemap. Only seven have been listed though. Is this normal? Or does this mean I am making a mistake somewhere?

On a sidenote, I hear a lot about these backlinks. Does this seriously mean I just go to as many sites as I can and just paste my link onto them?
