Does anybody know which is the most used programming language, Java or Visual Basic ?

Both Java and Visual Basic are used in software development and for different reasons. I am personally biased to say Java, but that wouldn't be accurate. Many internal business applications are written in Visual Basic, especially because it is fast to develop with.

Java on the other hand, may take slightly longer to develop but the options that one has when programming are greater (now, not saying that .NET is small by any means, just that it has limitations that Java doesn't). VB, like I said is fast, but often one loses easy maintainability for later on. It also is limited to systems where .NET can run (which is Windows and Mono for Ubuntu). Java can run anywhere where there is a JVM for it (which is nearly every OS).

HOWEVER, for certain applications, depending on the due date and if/when it needs to be updated, I may use VB for that application (and I have before). So both languages have their strengths and of course I tend to like Java more, but a language is a language and VB is an option for sure.

i think it depends what you want to do. but i will have to go with Java here. at least where i live the market of labor is looking more for Java developers then VB(.NET that is)

If I had to choose between those two, I would think Java would be the more used of the two. If you look at the topic counts in both forums here there are a lot more in Java than VB.NET. That should tell you something. A lot of those posts though are from students though. Java is taught in a lot of schools, and for good reason. When you enter the work force you will almost always be using some form of object-oriented programming paradigm. Java, being a strict object-oriented language, will teach these concepts to students. You are working with the ideas of object-oriented programming from the get go. You don't have to retrain in object-oriented thinking. VB.NET isn't truly that strict. You can use it or not, in a sense anyway. The same is true with C++. C++ isn't a strict object-oriented language. You use as much or as little of it as you want.

While I would say that Java is used far more than VB or VB.NET, I dont take it from the post counts here because if I'm not mistaken the Java forum was created long before the VB.NET forum here.

EDIT: After checking Java is forum #32, VB.NET is forum #67 so 35 forums were created between Java and VB.NET

Java has been around much longer than .NET, and I wasn't going entirely on post count. I was just using that as an example. Java is from 1995. .NET is a few years later. Both did have mixed reviews when they first came out though. Still do at times I guess. They've both had staying power though. That says something. Many languages have passed into obscurity.

I've tried so many times to get into using Java and just cannot get myself excited about it (which is really weird since the syntax is no much like C#, my favorite development language)

I would agree with you on this. I've looked at Java several times over the years. I just can't seem to "get into it." It just seems awkward to me. The syntax is basically the same. Probably part of it is that C# wraps everything easily into an EXE instead of having to go through the hassle of JAR files and everything. Also, it is the IDE as well. MS did a great job with their IDE and Intellisense.

I find Java super easy to use. Maybe it's just the API and easy documentation, but I love it. I wished I could find C++ documentation as good as Javas. ((I haven't seen it)). As for VB, I think they just... how do I say... tried too hard to make it simple that they've actually over-complicated it imho. >__<
