Just wanted to see if anyone here hasn't tried out Dropbox yet and wanted to sign up for the service. You get 2GB free starting out but if you refer people they increase your Dropbox size by 250MB per referral up to a max of 8GB, before you have to pay for premium service.

In exchange for signing up through my referral link (I don't make any money off this at all), you'll also get an extra 250MB when you sign up as well (we both get it!) so it's a win-win situation. Link: Referral link. Would appreciate it if you guys don't mind. It's completely free to use and is a widely known service if you haven't heard of it yet. They do have paid premiums but I don't feel like upgrading until I need more than 8GB of use, which I haven't reached yet.

For those who don't know what Dropbox is. It's basically a program that syncs all of your files into one central location no matter where you are. You simply install the application onto your computer and there is a Dropbox folder. Anything you choose to put in this folder, is accessible online or via other computers you have.

For example, you have a Desktop at home and you have some files saved on there. You travel to Hawaii with your laptop but don't have access to your Desktop. As long as the file is in your Dropbox folder, it syncs it across all your machines, even iPhone so now you can access that file simutaneously. you can even share access to certain folders you create inside the Dropbox folder with friends so you two can share files, applications, whatever with each other without having to have them log onto an online FTP or do this long file transfer process.

I'm a great fan of DropBox. I've been using it for some time. I even got a national non profit using it for some of their business. As a service, I can recommend it highly.

On the other hand, solicitors, telemarketers, etc, have a special spot picked out for them in hell.

I use Windows Live SkyDrive, it provides 25 GB storage(50 MB max. per file). Works fine for me. Doesn't require any application to use.

I just thought it to be a just-another-file-hosting-service(referrals, points, etc.), but with an application. My Bad.

SkyDrive and MobileMe have the same problem; OS lock in. Even though I have Ubuntu on most of my Linux boxes, I still don't use Ubuntu One, because it's not universally available. When cloud storage is tied to an OS it's lost the medium's most appealing quality; access anywhere.

The tipping point for DropBox is both a clean website for access and also an iPhone app. Without at least a website, such services are simply unappealing.

there is also an Android app for dropbox. nice thing about that is that it doesnt require a mangina to use. (unlike the other "smart phone")
