Ruby is now more popular than C++ by Bjarne Stroustrup's measure

Mildly amusing if taken with a cup of Earl Gray.

I'm more inclined to go with this one: http://www.tiobe.com...tpci/index.html

Ruby ain't even in the top 10. While ruby is an entertaining language, I can't think of anything major actually done with it. It certainly isn't used in any serious business applications I'm aware of.

While his quote may be true, Stroustrup could put less to bitch about into C++.

The TIOBE index is blah. I find it hard to rely on such things.

I'm not quite sure there you get your news at, but where I get mine, Ruby is used for tons of stuff.

He's the guy responsible for C++.

He isn't necessarily important to listen to. I don't think this article is meant to be taken seriously.

I believe Twitter is coded in Ruby.

MySpace is coded in ColdFusion.

Twitter uses Ruby for it's frontend and Scala for most of the backend.

I immediately knew someone would mention Twitter. It's worth nothing how the one big rails site survives it's traffic: "Rails is a matter of cost: just throw more CPUs at it."

More:

Quote

Itís great that people are hard at work on faster implementations of the language, but right now, itís tough. If youíre looking to deploy a big web application and youíre language-agnostic, realize that the same operation in Ruby will take less time in Python. All of us working on Twitter are big Ruby fans, but I think itís worth being frank that this isnít one of those relativistic language issues. Ruby is slow.

I recall reading some of their architecture where they used JRuby, and then Scala, to help with the issues. Hardly a ringing endorsement.

I'm not defending Ruby as a language. It's definitely slow. I'm just sayin', you made it out as if it's some obscure language that nobody has ever heard of before, and that certainly isn't the case.

I must be the only one who thinks Ruby stands on its own as an interesting language, Rails be damned.

You definitely aren't the only one. The Clojure community is full of people who came from Ruby to Clojure, and I know tons of people who used Clojure Ruby for stuff other than web-dev, and think it's an awesome language. I'm one of them.

Damn. I wish somebody would have pointed that out to me. I borked that one up good. :(
