Ever fall in love with your code?

Posted 20 July 2010 - 08:40 AM

So...ever wrote code that you thought you did so well that you just can't stop looking back at it? Or, well, maybe you can...but it takes a while? Lol...

I've done it more than once, and I'm currently doing it with a class/function that I wrote for dynamically showing text in different languages. At first it reads from the headers, but also allows you to choose the language of your choice. I haven't used it in any websites yet, but you can see what I mean here~

And yeah, I have posted this link before, but somewhere else :P

Anyway, was wondering if this happened to anyone else or if I'm weird. Like I said, it's not the first time it's happened.

Yours,
Shane~

Ive been playing with OO PHP, and I have written my first ever class, a very simple class which is used to handle the results of a SimplePie query.

One of the methods/functions generates relative dates, and I know to many of you guys its nothing, but everytime I look at the code I can't help smiling.

Yeah I am THAT sad.

Oooo also my 300th post :D

I do fall in love with code every now and then.

Code that just flows from your finger tips... errors few and far between; clean formatting; concise and elegant symbols, keywords and data. The birds sing, in-tune with your lifted, dream-like state-of-mind. Colors seems brighter; everybody around is smiling, helping one another with whatever problem they have... of course, they don't have problems because, in that moment of serene, clear thought, errors are unimaginable. Compilation is finished before it even began. The binary you are left with opens and executes effortlessly, realising your expectations and talents encouragingly. It seems in this wondrous, uplifting instant, absolutely nothing can dampen the beauty in and around you.

Your boss taps you on the shoulder, stop day-dreaming, he snaps, and suddenly you're back in the dank, drab, dark cubicle, surrounded by other dank, drab and dark cubicles, surrounded by a wall of unappreciative bricks, dotted with windows lacking glass, for, instead, they have cold metal bars.

For a brief, fleeting single hour of the day, the shackles around your bruised, grazed ankles are released. You form an orderly line with your colleagues and file into the dinner hall.

Upon your cold and rusty trays is slopped an equally cold and rusty amalgamation of lumpy shame and bitter disgust.

Eat slop. Repeat morning.

Home is a work away from work. Lonely, confined solitude. A computer screen to keep your company. You eat a TV-dinner in front of your computer, watching IRC for anything, absolutely anything, you can interject your opinion on; watching the Amount Downloaded slowly creep up for your favorite movie/game in your bittorrent client.

You sit back and take a deep breath, acknowledging your lackluster being, and, yet, you do not feel sad. You do not feel remotely close to tears or depression. You're calm and intrigued, for you know that tomorrow, even if for the briefest of moments, you could once again experience what you experienced today. Complete, contented love.

Yeah, I fall in love with code every now and then.

Mark, you’re a poet (+1).

I can even fall in love with a mathematical formula … so falling in love with some self-written, carefully hatched code happens to and fro.

Today, I hate code.

Sometimes it's just impossible to think straight, and when that happens, boy, do I hate code.

I think if you truly enjoy programming, it's impossible not to have those moments where you look at what you've done, and how well it works, and think "Damn, am I good or what?" and revel in your glory a little bit.

For me, that usually happens when I write a long string of complex logic, save it, run it for the debug, and, lo and behold, it works right the first time, no syntax errors or anything. Best feeling ever right there :)

Not trying to imply the sombre and melancholic tone of the story had anything to do with your slave-driver mentality... that's just a coincidence. :2guns:
