There are plenty of database tutorials you can look at, as well as Personal Messenger tutorial. However, as PHP isn't an interactive language, it really isn't the tool for handling a chat server. Something more like Java is. I do think you can alleviate for some of this by using Javascript polling, but Java handles it a little better in my opinion.

Of course rather than reinventing the wheel, you could use something like AjaxIM.

Of course Java is just as good, but it depends on whether you have any Java experience or not..

Ajax Is definitely the way to go. There is all kinds of tutorials on YouTube for this just type in "Create Ajax chat box" or something like that and you will get tons of tutorials
