I need to have a application running that would accept connections from client applications on the server. Do web hosting providers allow me to install server applications on their machine ?

If they don't then what is the alternative may of doing it?
Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

If you get yourself a VPS, you can do whatever the hell you want with it.

I use mine, for example, as a website-host, and also for SSH IRC.

Some do & some do not. Read over the guidelines before you sign up or agree to anything.
