mouse programming

I am trying to program multiple usb optical mice as position encoders to control a telescope. I am running gentoo linux and am trying to do as much of the programming in python as possible. Are there any python modules that would allow me to read out the state (x,y position and buttons) of a usb mouse and if so where can I find them and their documentation?
