I understand what you mean. In my experience, graphic design refers essentially to visual elements - logo, header, buttons etc. Graphic design can also refer to advertisement layouts and typography work.

When you talk about web design, you are referring to the front-end visual layout of a website. It might also include front-end code and basic web typography.

Some people use the term web design to discuss the overall creation of a site, but usually it still refers to front-end - graphics and code.
