When you come to think about it, this isn't really a big deal. Large companies always sue other large companies whenever they feel their patents have been used. Doesn't mean it's true.

Think about it. What does Oracle have to lose? If Google did do something wrong, they will get a settlement. If Google didn't, they simply lost a few million dollars on legal fees.

Google can expect more of this now that they are at the top of the mobile OS in the US. Apple has been sued like 20 times since the IPhone released because all of these different companies thought they had the patent for multi-touch. Has that hurt Apple in any way? Nope.

Microsoft has already came out and said that Android infringes on their patents(but there's no lawsuit after 4 months), and now Oracle. I am sure another lawsuit will be brought against Google from another large corporation this year.

This is just the way of the wild in the large corporate business in the US.

1) Lol Oracle.
2) I thought that was all open source? The article is lacking in specifics.
3) I think it will end up with some kind of deal such that Google pays royalties, even if Google is in the "right."

OpenJDK is GPL

Sun had some patents on silly little things in Java, Oracle now obviously owns said patents.

Patent agreement only applies to compatible implementations. Android does not use Java, Android uses the Dalvik VM which Google wrote.

This is similar to when Sun sued Microsoft over Java over an incompatible implementation of Java.

Basically Oracle wants Android to use JME.

Well, at least now I understand why IBM are using their own Java VM. Good way to avoid money trolls.

Google is using their own "Java" VM.

It's actually a bit of a misunderstanding that Android runs Java. It actually runs Dalvik. They take Java ME bytecode and "fix" it.

This has pissed off the Java gods since it was first made known. It basically says standard Java ME just doesn't cut it. Google leverages some Java code base, and tools, and the popular adoption of the language itself. They just chose to bypass the JVM, and circumvent a lot of restrictions.

The bytecode that makes its way to Google's VM needn't start out life as Java. If Oracle pushes it, it's possible that code will come from some other language platform.

That's not it at all, if you do some more reading on this topic you will see that Google did indeed do something wrong, and I think Oracle has the right to make sure what they have patents and copyrights on is protected and not used without permission, and I hope Google has to pay for it, and dearly.

I don't think this is about patents or copyrights, if anything it's about trademarks and ensuring that if someone wants to call their JVM implementation Java then it has to be compatible with Java.

And what did they do wrong? Just because one company says that another company violated their patents doesn't mean it ACTUALLY happened.

Hey eclipsed4utoo but why is it ok for Google to do something like this but when Microsoft did it they were crucified by everyone? I hope Oracle drags Google through the mud on this one

Because it was proven that Microsoft did something wrong. It has not been proven that Google did anything wrong. Anybody can make accusations....doesn't necessarily mean they are true.

Exactly.

For those who think this is about Java, you are wrong. Java is just caught in the middle of another BS corporate patent dispute. Oracle is showing itself to be just like Apple in that respect. in fact, I would not be surprised at all if Apple has something to do with this given how much they would have to gain by hurting Android. But Google undoubtedly has patents to use as leverage and will force Oracle into a stalemate. If anyone is happy to see one corporation sue another then I would say that person is either a fanboy or just has no sense. This is not good for anyone - except for possibly executives at Oracle and Apple.

eclipsed4utoo from the sounds of it Google did the same thing Microsoft did (bypassing the JVM with their own creation) but people think that's ok because it's Google (Apple can get away with things like this too). It's like Google & Apple (and their fans) think they should be treated differently than any other company, like they should be able to get away with things companies like Microsoft cannot get away with, like they're somehow special.

Programmist you can call me whatever you like but I'm loving this. It's time Google gets what's coming to them, it's time someone shows them they aren't special and they dont get to live by different rules than any other company does, and if it means it costs them millions of dollars then so be it, it wont affect me one bit
