I would figure the BSD versions of Unix to be commercial grade. I've worked for & with a ton of companies that run FreeBSD &/or NetBSD. I've never known a single company (or individual) to run OpenSolaris.

It might have been "commercial grade", but it's userland consisted of a combination of common Linux GNU stuff and old Sun stuff (yucky). The "Java Desktop System" was just an old version of Gnome.
Binary compatibility with old SunOS stuff was interesting but probably not that useful for anyone today. Proprietary Nvidia support out of the box was cool but lacking (no CUDA). Package management wasn't too bad.
ZFS time slider was very cool.
Basically it wasn't much of a workstation OS. Will be sad to see it go, but I have to question if it ever really was alive.
Edit: No support for suspend/hibernate on laptops also.

No, it isn't dead. There are active projects based on Open Solaris.
