It'll never stop. As a Malaysian, I can tell you this...piracy is VERY popular here. There's even a street here with full of shops that sell pirated CDs, DVDs and even games and software discs. Yeah, one whole kilometer of shops with pirated goods. And sometimes, you can see policemen shopping for pirated stuff there. This is a really common phenomenon in Malaysia, and it seems like no one's giving any shit about it.

Same deal here. Huge Aladdin-type market where you can buy DVDs, music, games, etc. XBox 360 games cost a paltry 40bs! (5.90$) Wii games 15bs!

Another thing to think about is that there are a lot of us techie types who love to solve problems and puzzles as well as come up with out of the box solutions to things that most people wouldn't think up. This may be a lot smaller group of individuals, but as long as there is something that someone can try and crack, they will. I would say a lot of crackers out there love to simply find ways around the security and as long as companies are trying to throw down the DRM hammer, then there will be crackers out there to find a way around it.

Yeah... if it can be made, it can be hacked. Phones here are 'unlocked' on a regular basis with no heed paid to the measures meant to prevent this, same deal with Wii's and Xbox-360's and PS3. I know people who used to import Wii's, hack 'em, and sell 'em on ebay to every country in the world (except nigeria). once hacked they could play all games from all regions- obviously a nice thing to have.

When you have 400$ salary and your bills, rental and all other expenses cost you 300$, what are you going to do with a 100$ you got left? Save it to buy photoshop in 6 months? Every class of society has access to the internet, meaning rich, poor, tall, short, criminals, cops... Everyone. Internet is taking characteristics of today's world. In RL its shoplifting, on the internet its stealing code. In RL it's a street argument, on the internet its a forum fight(AMG GOTTA LOVE THESE !!111one). Like coppers write license plates, your IP might be logged somewhere. Will it ever stop? Well... Will criminal ever stop?

Erm, Piracy is the future of the internet because it is not priacy. This video will explain:
http://www.youtube.c...h?v=jvyqo25tgWM

Thats pretty good and I'm a adovcate for piracy. I do not admit todo doing piracy. and I will fight OFCOM for giving out broadband details out to media companies. Same as I will fight them banning the R4.

This says something about humans and I personally don't like it.

It also says about the impact of the current socio-economic structures of the world upon the humans, which justifies the piracy in my view.

Cry me a river. Just because one can't afford it doesn't mean they deserve to have it. I don't see a Porsche in my drive way, maybe I should just steal one, because heck, I'm certainly not saving up to buy one, not with $100 week... ;)

It doesn't justify it. It was just a note that some people don't have a choice if they're gonna buy the software or not.

This skips over the fact that there is a fundamental difference between piracy and theft. The problem with theft is not the surreptious or underhanded manner with which things are acquired: If it were, actually buying things surreptiously (the way most people used to buy porn) would be considered bad- but it isn't (the act of buying porn itself, I mean- whatever you do with the porn is another argument). The real problem with theft is that you had something, you had earned it, and now you don't have it anymore because of the actions of someone else.

No, Piracy is not theft because piracy takes nothing away, it only makes a copy. The problem with piracy is that the people who did the legwork get nothing for it: if you can solve this problem in a reasonable manner, there would be no such thing as 'piracy' because the people who do the work would actually be gaining rewards for it (and lets be clear: they aren't losing rewards now, they simply aren't gaining the rewards they think they should be).

Don't even go there.

There is said item, be it software, pornography, a movie, whatever.

Did you pay for it?

No.

Then it's fucking stolen, end of list. Don't beat around the bush, don't spin it any other way. There is no gray area. You either bought the item legitimately or you did not.

Also we already had this argument with mostly the same people. We could save a lot of time by copy and pasting the arguments back in this thread.

No piracy won't go away.
Yes, the legitimate customer gets dicked by both sides of it.
Finally, whether you think it's stealing or not has no bearing on whether it is justified or not.

Well, you can get a DVD here with MYR3.00. It's just sad to see people work so hard developing softwares and games, and people go around buying pirated version of their hard work.

When the music industry starts outputting music at a reasonable price and in a reasonable way then I think piracy will decrease. Right now music subscription services are getting into some interesting territory that is actually appealing so we will just have to see.

Musicians get almost all their revenue from concerts anyways, right?
