Sixth Sense - Something pretty amazing.

Posted 23 August 2010 - 02:03 AM

The other night, I managed to come across a postgraduates research project called SixthSense and I just had to post it here. :) I believe this is where the future lies and the fact that he stated that it's going to be open source is going to allow for more ideas to be generated and help others.

Check it out if you haven't seen it before - SixthSense

Thanks for posting this, I have seen the BBC article about it before and initially also thought wow, this is the future of tech but the problems then started hitting me in the face.
The biggest problem I can see is the fact that this will require a plain surface to be projected upon, not so easy to find on a busy train or any crowded room so what so you have to do? Hold a plain surface to project upon? So what is the difference now between what you are holding and an ipad or smartphone... You have a clunky pendant around your neck, a smartphone in your pocket and a projection surface in your hand.

Please don't feel this is a criticism of the post, I am glad you reminded me of this so I could see the latest about it, I am just giving my opinion about the technology.

NeoTifa, here is a YouTube Link. I saw this last year I think. I think it would be amazing if it worked correctly but it's definitely a challenging task. One other problem is getting the LED projection strong enough to work in a bright setting. I think they were suppose to have a more functional prototype done by this fall but I haven't heard any new updates since the TED speech.

This has come up in a few topics here on DIC and I think everyone is excited... question is, when will it be open sourced?!?!

When I posted about it back in November I was very excited, but it has not seemed to mature much since then despite the media hype. I really hope that this is not another one of those "WOW" technologies which never materialize into anything real.
