Is identity theft really that big of an issue? No one wants the financial liability resulting from identity theft; however, does that really explain usernames in place of real names? Before burnout I was an online-gameaholic and I had my favorite username, Alucard, Dracula spelled backwards! It was not uncommon for me to play three days straight without sleep, but with frantic begrudged bathroom runs. I would play until I fell asleep face first into my keyboard. I was Alucard by God!

What do you all think about establishing a new Dreamincode rule doing away with usernames and requiring everyone to use their real names instead?

No. Blizzard tried to do that and there was massive uproar. If people want to associate their real life with forum/online persona that's their prerogative, period.

I dont tend to hide my identity online but one of the benifits of the internet for most people is the ability to remain anonomous and I dont think that right should be taken away.

However the idea sounds tempting, atleast it would reduce the ammount of keyboard warriors in online games/forums.

Blizzard actually has applied it, it's called Real I.D. I think it is bad idea primarily due to the fact that if you're battle net account were to be hacked the hacker would not only have access to your're full name and email, but any friends full name and email that you have added via Real I.D.

It wasn't fully implemented. They wanted to show your real name on the forums, that was nixed.

I've been NeoTifa since the sixth grade, NO ONE CAN TAKE THAT FROM ME!!!! Actually, it was Neo_Tifa, then I took out the underscore because I was lazy. Jk, it was actually because I got banned from GodsOblivion and made a second account. I had like 30 different names, which I can't remember now, but hey.

Ah I see, I never fully read into. I still think implementing it in game is a poor decession from a security stand point.

If someone gets your login details they would already have access to your private info regardless of the Real ID system. The only real issue is the fact that friends are added by email address rather then nicknames/handles.

Worse case scenario you get bombarded with Viagra.

I fail to see the connection between "online-gameaholic and I had my favorite username, Alucard" and "a new Dreamincode rule doing away with usernames and requiring everyone to use their real names instead".

Your story was either just fluff to get more than a statement out, or you failed to show us the internal links to removing user ids.

I say everyone is given a unique number (super more unique than a SSN), and that shit should be tattooed on your arm. Names and words are inherently fuzzy and not precise. Oh, that's right someone did that once. It was the Nazis. Your suggestion is in tune with the Nazis. How do you feel about that?
