You know what always annoyed me about the Borg? There was no way their designations could uniquely identify them, so if a Borg was assigned to a different ship did its designation change?

You're kidding me, right? If anyone tries to tell me I HAVE to use my real name, I'd quit this board (and any other that tries to imose it's will on me) in a heartbeat. What I don't understand is why you're so hung up on it. Is it making it harder for you to steal peoples identity if all you have to go on is a username? Grow up and get a life.

speaking of common names, as soon as gmail launched i snapped up my first.last@gmail.com. it was a pretty excellent grab. problem is that other people with my name keep getting emails sent to me on accident. it's infuriating, and i don't know the real email to tell them to knock that shit off.

Same, sort of. I got my first name, first two letters of last name; mc. While my first name isn't horribly common, there are a whole lot of Micks in the work.

I now know one of them buys lots of crap from a hunting supply that's too stupid to understand a "cancel this account" email. Another has a friend who loves to spam him, but is a little slow on reading her return email.

Baavgai, on the other hand, only gets spam from Mongolian travel agencies. I think there are two. Which, at the time I started using the handle, was about the same number of Mongols who could actually get on the Web.

Strangely, I actually proposed using user names at work instead of our first initial lastname convention. People change their last names. And none of the JGonzoles's were happy about having a number tacked on their name.

A unique user name, even if it's silly or provocative, is still better than an ambiguous one.

My username makes me stand out from all others with my name. My real name is also generic enough that there are others with the same name in the area. Was also my grandfather's name, and his grandfather's name, and his grandfather's name, get the picture?

BTW: Drone's names are attached to their function. If their function changes, their name changes to suit the new function. Seven of Nine wasn't always Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjuct to Unimatrix 01. Well, who really cares. It was only a TV show.

It appears usernames have been around longer than most people imagine. For example Mark Twain's username was Samuel Langhorne Clemens.
