c# irc password

Posted 04 September 2010 - 02:02 AM

Ok, I am beginner in c# and I made a program that connects to an IRC channel using meebey smart irc.
So I put a password on my channel but, if I use a program like Quick Memory Editor and search for it it will pop up.
Is there a way to hide it ?
irc.RfcJoin(channel+" "+"xxxxxxx");

Or if I search for the channel name it will popup with the password inside.

Thanks

It depends if the IRC server supports encryption. AFAIK, they don't.

If you're wanting to store a password in the app, that you don't want others to be able to find, then I really don't know how you'd do this.

Can you give us more info on your situation? Maybe there are other solutions.

Ok, it seems that theres no way to store it on the app.

Is it possible to encrypt the password in app.config and then when connecting to irc make the password normally ?

like this:
if the user goes and search for my channel string he will find something like this
#xxxxxxx iofeAWIUOFNWHAIURW
But if I use that it wont match the password in irc, so is there a way to make it work ?

Not sure, as you could easily reverse engineer the code and see the string, but I think there -may- be a way, but you'd have to ask someone else as I'm not sure. I've never hardcoded a password before ..

Hello again, I am making a program that connects to an IRC channel but, the channel has a password so you can only connect to it using the program.
But the problem is that if you use a program like Quick Memory Editor and search for the channel name it will pop up with the password together.
So is there a way to hide or do something with that ?

Code in the program:
irc.RfcJoin("#channelhere"+ " " + "passhere");

String found using quick memory editor:
#channelhere passhere

Thanks!

I don't know about that, but I tried XOR encryption and no success.
If I go connect using an encrypted password I just get kicked because the password is wrong.

The fact is, if somebody wants to get the password, they will.

You would quite possibly want to write your own mini-encoding algorithm, and store a sequence of encoded bytes within your application.

This is, I think, completely irrelevant though. You could easily use a network sniffer to see the password. As I said before, if somebody wants to get the password, it's amazingly easy to do so.

I looked up your issue. Smart IRC has a overload for the RfcJoin function.
try this:
irc.RfcJoin(channel,password);

But still the question is, is the OP willing to take the password from the client or is he trying to build an IRC client that uses a hidden password, inaccessible to the user?

From the fact that he's asking the question, I'm pretty sure we're assuming the latter ;)
