What is better? Tech school or University?

Posted 07 September 2010 - 02:13 PM

If I am looking for a job as a programmer, would an employer look at a tech school degree more than a university degree or am I better off going to a full fledged university over a tech school?

By "tech school" do you mean the 2 year colleges (had to look it up on Wikipedia, because I'm not sure what you're talking about).

Ok...

Well, which particular schools do you have in mind? I mean, the answer to your question obviously depends on the choice of schools. A degree from ITT Tech *might* be a bit better than some no-name community college, but it might not be as good as <insert name of any public school that is known by anyone>.

If you're just comparing schools in general then list the top technical schools in the country that could rival universities like MIT, Stanford, and Cal, when it comes to academic content. I could then probably talk to people at my school and see their opinions.

university. notttt itt tech. and i think you mean community college? university > community college, but i dont think community college is a horrible choice. i think if you live in a town with a high demand, you would just start at lower pay, but still be able to get a job. itt tech is probably at the bottom of the school hierarchy.

Do you want to be a code monkey? Just come in 9-5 and write some code then leave? Do you want to implement someone else's ideas?

If you answered yes to any of these then the Tech School (given it is a recognizable name) is fine. If you want to do true Computer Science work and figure out how to implement problems yourself than *most* tech schools will fall short. This being said there are some truly good Tech Schools out there. If you are interested in not having to have a liberal arts aspect to your education but want to focus on the Computer Science part you might want to check out schools like IIT (Illinois Institute of Technology) as I think they focus on the nuts and bolts and don't worry about the other subject matters. But I could be wrong as I did not look at what they had to offer before making my choice.

You have to decide where you want to work. If you want to focus more on end-user software a technical institute would be great. If you want to focus more on the scientific aspect of it, get a degree in CS from a University. Each one has its benefits so choose according to where you see yourself in 10 years. What do you enjoy doing?

Tech school might be better than nothing if you can't get into a decent university, but cost wise it's as much as a lot of quality private universities (and more than some good public ones). If you can get into a good university, university is definitely the better choice, imo. I have a couple friends that went to ITT tech for other engineering educations and though the education itself seemed pretty good, they have had some trouble getting jobs (though our state economy is in worse shape than others). I really don't know how ITT Tech ranks in the real world though, whether they are the best tech school or just the most advertised ;-)

You mean even if education is shit, but it's cheap, it can compare to some good universities?
