The enslavement of everything resulting from related technologies, bringing the end of the world, quite biblically. Including uses in war, interrogation, the justice system, and other things that are more than likely very wrong.

This depends a lot on the capability of the machine to interpret what the mind is actually thinking: the same synapses on the same neurons in two different minds will most likely be two completely unrelated thoughts, and not something that is interpretable based on location, synapse, etc. Since it's probably going to be possible in the future to do the kind of mediative "bam there it is" input, The big uses I can imagine are in how data is entered and organized: Just think of programming data structures, where you typically have a group of nodes arranged in some way: now imagine being able to enter those nodes pretty much exactly as soon as you think of them- and not just for programming (which will probably be more accessible as well), but for everything. The same goes for sequential items... the same kind of revolution click-and-drag formatting was for type, but directly for your thoughts.

A much more realistic scenario is to have this kind of machine getting direct input, which you would train your mind to send out: moving a cursor (eventually, hopefully, in 3d). moving objects, even multiple objects independently, around a screen. This is without going into the possibilities in gaming: imagine playing battlefield 2 as a sniper with a brain-input thingy on and being able to make pin-point shots all the way across the map if you're in a meditative trance, and having the same 'ol "whoopsie!" accuracy if you're distracted (I know the game is old, but I think enough people have played it/still play it to get the idea). Imagine mentally controlling arms, legs, and maybe more than that- tentacles, wings, tails. Mirrors edge is already a good game: imagine in ten years when it's just a physics engine and helicopters chasing you around buildings. On second thought, try not to imagine the 400-lbs hardcore couch-potato-ninjas who would probably be the only ones playing competitively.

I'm not convinced a mind reading machine is required for that.
