Grad School Web Design

Posted 09 September 2010 - 02:44 PM

Hey everyone!
I need your thoughts on something. I want to get into Grad school (for telecommunications), and one of the admissions requirements is to send them something that has to do with Web design, theatrical design, etc. Web design is right up my alley, but, I'm not sure which direction I should take this. Should I code it all myself, using HTML/XHTML, or use a template and make the design look fantastic? I'm not sure which would be better, so let me know if you have any thoughts!

Thanks!! :turned:

Really depends on what the requirements are.
But I would go down the line of designing and coding it myself
using a pre-made template just sounds like cheating to me.
Why can you not make your own design look fantastic?

Take a look around the internet at some websites you really like the look off.
Look at things such as the colour combination, layout, white space, images and fonts
to give you some ideas.

I would normally do a mockup in an image editor before I am ready to code the site.

Hey, thanks for the input. It's not that I feel coding the entire site would be a bad idea, or make it look less fantastic, it's just that it is more time consuming rather than using a template. Obviously. But I do agree...I think it would benefit me in the long run. I just am unsure of what the site should pertain to.

I would recommend, for best results, to code it yourself. :)

Grab an excellent background, make a stylized navbar, and throw in some good features.

Maybe a couple of good tables to organize information, etc.

Using templates is okay, but if it is for a school, that would be a bit risky.

That would be unethical, and quite possibly illegal in certain instances (the latter two). Learn how to do it yourself.
