Post-9/11 Paranoia, Stupidity, or just finding any excuse to have a go

Posted 13 September 2010 - 04:54 AM

So. September 11th, 2010.
I went on facebook at 6am, as I do normally, to put a joke up.
That day's joke was on the common stupidity of a few areas of America, not amercians in general though.
Out of coincidence, my joke involved the term '9/11' as part of a 'character' conversation.
Quickly realizing how badly it could be misconstrued, I took it down at 6.01am. One person saw it, and spread that I'd made a 9/11 joke.

I stress here that it wasn't, and I refuse to repost the joke as I don't wish to offend anyone else aswell.

So, I put up a second status saying "In fairness, 9/11 jokes are really inappropriate today... maybe I'll make a Jew joke instead" as let's be honest - they are inappropriate. A few people liked the status and we had a laugh about the STATUS and not 9/11.

Then on MSN I recieved a verbal attack from someone who did see the joke. Saying I was a 'self-righteous c*nt' and 'so self absorbed' that I am 'unable to admit to my wrongs and simply apologize'

So I took his advice - I put an apology up stating that it wasn't a 9/11 joke and it was a stupidity joke. What I made a note of saying however is that I wouldn't apologize for the offense I'd caused as the offense as far as I'm concerned was a figment of there imagination. Offense at the stupid bit, yeah, I apologized, but not the 9/11.

So then a group of Americans see that and decide they want to have a huge go at me - making threats and all that jazz as they do - because I am a 'hipocrite' for saying i wouldn't make a 9/11 joke when I did - which I didn't.

So what exactly is this. Are they swept up in post-9/11 paranoia and saw '9/11' in my joke and assumed it was an attack? Are they actually stupid and misread it? Or were they just looking for any excuse to have a go on 9/11?

And please, I don't want people using this as an excuse or platform to express anger against me for this. If this post offends anyone, I'm genuinely sorry: I didn't make a jew joke, I didn't make a 9/11 joke, And I would never do so either.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Yeah, we want to see the bad jokes :(

We'll cry otherwise.

And honestly, I think it is because people take things far too seriously these days, and go out of their way to find things to be offended at. Hell, if you were talking about someone being late for work, and arriving at 9.11am, someone out there would have been offended by it.

Don't worry about it, just make sure you are an equal opportunities insulter :)

And give us jokes :P

The joke was "Statistically, 9 out of 11 Americans won't understand this joke". Stupidty as far as I'm concerned. I realized how easily it could have been misconstrued as an attack so took it down.

@Bort: I agree that people try to find things to be offended by, but why the hell go out of your way to find meaning where it isn't meant?

{edit} I am an equal opportunities insulter! I make a joke targetting something different every day :) Except Murder, Rape etc

Funny or not, I think it was in bad taste but I wouldn't flip out over some retarded (nonfunny) joke.

Agreed, and exactly why I took it down.

No matter what you do, or when, someone will always find a way to be offended. this is not limited to the US...it is a global phenomenon.

It is the bane of living in a free society. One I am willing to live with.

Well, actually, I'm British; and I've never once noticed it anywhere here. Maybe I should get out more.

@KYA: Quite a true point. Though probably not the worst part of living in a free society.

I point you in the direction of your local chavs (or however you want to spell it). They get offended by someone walking past them at times. Or if you don't immediately have a cigarette to give them, regardless of if you smoke or not. Or money for the bus...the list goes on.

The point is, someone, somewhere will be offended, no matter what is said and by whom.

Side note: I thought the joke was kinda amusing, although yeah, maybe not the best day, lol.

Just made my day.

@Bort: I avoid leaving the home at all costs, and when I do go out I make sure it's within specially crafted time frames that I know the chav's aren't out in. But yeah, you're right. But chav's are just ar*seholes to be frank.
