For instance, when you select a section of a sprite sheet how do you do about finding out the coordinates of the top left of the sprite you want and the size of it?

I generally open the file in photoshop and zoom in really close with the rulers turned on so I can see each pixel labeled. Then I add guides where I think the sprite should start and stop and use those guides to keep track of the x, y, width, and height of each sprite in the file.

You can always e-mail me, or send me some PM's on these forums. I spend an exorbitant amount of time on this site every day, so if you send me a pm, I'll definitely get it pretty quick.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that the e-mail link is in my profile.

If you have some problems and advice that would be helpful for the rest of the community then it would be good if you could keep it in the forums

When I draw my sprites I have my guides and grid set to 8x8 pixels a square (or double that for higher res pixel art). I use CTRL+' to toggle the grid and I use it to help position my pencil. Don't forget to uncheck the snap or you'll have a hard time trying to draw (Photoshop). However, GIMP had a similar setting too. There's also specialized spriting programs made for the sole purpose of animating and pixel arting things.
