A good book to read?

Posted 03 October 2006 - 09:19 PM

I'm rather undecided on what language to use to program/design a webpage

I know a little HTML, but I also know Java and a little C++ and a pinch of PHP.
I guess I'd rather choose Java or C++ over anything to program, but I'm wondering if anyone knows a good book that I could refer to to refresh my knowledge and design a decent webpage?

I wouldn't mind learning a new program if it is better than Java :)

Thanks

I'm going to move this over to the new "Building Your Site" forum. I think it's probably more appropriate over there.

he goes through the effort of moving the thread but will not respond, lazy webmaster. ;P

so your not going to be needing java or c++ to program your websites.

the html and php are better.

html. the basis of the web.
on top of that it is really up to you and what you are trying to do as to what your going to program with.

in html you can set up the website the way you want and all that good stuff,
but css nowadays is a big thing for customizing the look of your site,
i could make a list of the other ones but you asked for a book.

I read one a while back called the web handbook, simply enough, but it was handed down to me and i have no idea where you would find it or something similar nowadays.

well i was gonna post up my own beginner html tutorial but we already had one, and it looks pretty good, maybe a quick read through if you already know it :

do you know CSS yet?

try Bulletproof Wev Design and Stylin' with CSS

where i work we use html, xhtml, css, php, flash. & xml. i am a "designer." there is a seperation of coders and designers. i have to use flash, and i <3 flash, so i code a teeny bit but other people do the real coding & make the php & xml templates. it is all about making for easy updates: blogs, podcasts, videos, show promotes, etc. i think it would be lucrative to be the programming genius behind such multimedia sites or to be able to come up w/ the framework for one. my love is video though. so i don't think i will learn so much about all the technical web stuff. i barely feel like a web designer.

i did, however, buy this book: PHP, MySQL, and Apache and i liked the PHP section.

Nope, no CSS. Jus heard its up and coming... but I heard that a long while back so it's probably already running.

I have briefly used Flash Macromedia though, can't put my finger on which version, but 8 comes to mind though (mebe 8.1)
I did fancy that. It was quite easy to use.
I came up to the point of designing the page, but I never put it online or anything, just saved it as an html document and never got back to it.

I'm looking forward to reading that book. I think I got it on hold.. mebe it was jus PHP and MySql book.
Oh well..
