Bye Bye Big Ben

Posted 12 October 2010 - 06:17 AM

In the start of ramadan this year the first tick on the Abraj-al-bait took place which is a clock tower 5 times larger than big ben.. Even though the tower itself is not yet complete, the clock is ticking.. and has taken the record from Big Ben..

I do, but for practical purposes not religious "who's the biggest" contests.

Is anyone standing on the ground actually going to be able to read the clock? Seems to me like it'd be too hard to make out the proper time with it being so far away from you, which then defeats the entire purpose of a clock...

Whow.... there...... Lets not take this like that "Mosque on ground Zero" Topic... (Whatever happened to it anyway)... I just love big buildings and that's why i'm posting this..

@kilorn, I don't think so.. it is an enormous clock and it is illuminated at night..

Definitely some amazing architecture, I just question the practicality of a clock on top of a tower that tall.

Wohoo another my dick is bigger than your dick thread.

I agree with Christoph on this one, I love big buildings, downtown skylines but not for religious purposes. And what good is a clock no one can see? Maybe they can tell the time before they fly a jet into it.

I'm not saying the building is not impressive, it is. I like it too. I just question the practicality of it.

Wow! That thing is enormous! Since the ball on top is solid gold, would there be guards or something protecting it?

Astronauts need to be able to see what time it is too!

@Sergio Tapia
I guess that would be necessary... still i don't think anyone can steal that enormous thing... even if it is solid gold...

BTW, Big Ben is the bell in the clock tower at Westminster...not the clock itself.

Considering the clock that new tower is eclipsing for size is around 150 years old...well by 2010 I'd have expected our engineering feats to be a little past that. Still and all, I guess a big-ass building I'll never see is impressive...I guess.

If it's solid gold, they are screwed! Gold is pretty heavy and a solid ball of it would be so heavy it would be very difficult to lift.

Even so, gold is rarely put by itself because it's very malleable, it's generally mixed with other stronger metals.
