introducing self & sloooooow machine...

Posted 24 October 2006 - 01:03 PM

"Hi jedtimmer! We noticed you haven't posted yet. We'd like to offer a few..."

OK. Take you up on it.

1. At moment I'm back at my old place in Malaysia - at the old, slow, Win98 DELL, on the old dial-up, on the old, slooooow/decrepit line and using the old (@!X!!!*%!!) ISP.

Everything is slow as h--l! but dreamincode and any link I click on here is extreeeeemely, exxxxxasperatingly & horrrrriffically slooooow - at least twice as slow as any other website I've been to in last few days.

Anyway to speed things up?

2. When I clicked on links "introduce yourself" and also " Go Ahead! Post Your Programming Question ", I logically expected to jump right into a new "post" window wherein I could begin
typing my "introduction" message. After about 15 minutes and half-a-dozen tries, I got nowhere - except back to the original page I started from. Is this any way to run a RailRoad? Or is it me again???

3. Whenever I try to download a pdf file (I do have Adobe Reader onboard) like the VisBasic and Java Reference files,
a new, blank page window opens and just sits there. The only
thing on the page is a placeholder icon for a picture or something in upper-left corner.

What could be wrong (my settings?); and do you have these files available in html format also (like Tech Republic)?

4. Unfortunately, in many cases I usually get a windows error
message after 98% .htm file download complete (very time-consuming and horribly frustrating) to the effect that "the file could not be saved to the specified location..." ( a longstanding, unresolved problem w/ just about every pc and OS I've ever used - but much worse here and now).

Sometimes it might be the heavy graphics and low-mem - but lately I see a lot of "... because one of its components is missing".

For years I wondered why Windows can't at least do the honorable thing - like it syas; that is, after grinding away for minutes and minutes to the "98% complete" point, why can't it at least leave it at that and give me that "98%"??? But no! back to square 1 it is, after all that horrific waste of time...
Progress & Efficiency, it's called.

Who cares about the "missing components" - as long as I get at least something. Let me decide if it's useful or not...

I've posted at over a dozen forums over the years, etc. but unfortunately never received any reply of consequence via which to resolve the issue.

Currently, in most cases, I get the same error even when attempting to save in "html only" format (when components are missing). Only "text format" works.

Well, I better stop while I'm ahead - but I sure wish there were a way for me to at least download those 2 reference (cheat) files. I'm building a data base on and trying to comprehend and learn some of this exciting stuff. Unfortunately won't be able to get back on the XP and the hi-speed line for couple months.
Just the way it is.

If I ever win the lottery big, I promise to share it with everyone who can help with the above (after I take my 50% off the top, of course!). Scouts honor!

Appreciate,

jed...

Man you sound like you are having simalar problems with your ISP that I am at home.

99% of my problems are due to my sub 14.4 (sometimes it says it connects at 33.6 but I know it is a pack of lies) connection timing out in the middle of a file transfer. I have relieved most of the problems by using firefox on my craptop at home but I only ever surf so to speak inbetween calls at work.

Hence why you see me logged in here between the hours of 8-5 CST (-6GMT)
